Like I said I’m going to take it apart tomorrow and see what’s going on. And if there’s is rust I’ll clean it up and lubricate shoes

I'll put my $.02 in...I had a 2014 Fiesta ST with four-wheel disk brakes that would do this every time. If I drove home in the rain and set the e-brake when I parked, then came out say a day later, the rear brakes would stick like that and make a grinding noise as I drove away. I only bring this up because IMO putting rear disks on our trucks, which may provide less fade and better stopping power, won't necessarily eliminate this problem. The pads on that car were semi-metallic and the moisture between the disk and the pad is what's causing the rust. I'm not sure if the rear brake shoes on our trucks are semi-metallic, but after 8000 miles your rear brakes are wearing some and it's probably the moisture in between the shoes and the drum. With my Fiesta, I learned to park the car in first gear without the e-brake after a car wash or a drive in the rain. With my truck, my driveway is level enough that I just put the truck in Park and never set my e-brake.

I'm perfectly ok with this. The extra stopping power of discs would be wasted for most, the only time I'd want it is if I towed/hauled heavy loads in the mountains a lot. I've done both in my area and never felt the brakes were overwhelmed.

I like having a good e-brake, the cars Ive had with 4 discs they were always weak, to the point my Subaru would inch backwards down my parents driveway even in 1st gear if I didn't crank the handle up hard enough.

Drum maintenance interval is also substantially longer than disc, which I like. I get the advantages of disc brakes, but I don't think for the rear axle of a Tacoma the benefit justifies the cost.

Does anybody ever clean and lube the shoes on their trucks? I might have to do that this summer since the truck is two years old now. Also, my one ton truck and lots of other large trucks have drums and have no trouble stopping lots of weight.
