    How do we know if our rear brakes need to be adjusted?

    I always heard if you get about 12-18 clicks while pulling your e brake handle then your rear brakes are in adjustment. Using your e brake and braking in reverse automatically adjusts them periodically, but the tech manual article Rock Lobster posted is the best way to get them in adjustment to begin with.

    4Runner Trail wheels and Toyo Open Country ATII tires 265-70-17. Cosmetic stuff like Pro grille and OffRoad black bumper trim, vinyl delete on side, added hood graphic, OEM tube steps.
    That lever usually prevents you from reducing the spread of the shoes and not the other way around. You can usually adjust outward with just a screwdriver. If you can easily spin the adjusting wheel, you are going in the right direction.

    When I had my toyota buddy adjust my drums, i was only able to pull the e-brake out 3 clicks after the adjustment. after some time, maybe 6 or 7. before the adjustment it was like 14 or so.

    if you have more than 10 clicks, and get them adjusted, your brakes will engage much sooner. keep that in mind on your first drive!

    The only thing that keeps the rear brakes adjusted is using the emergency brake .

    Unlike American vehicles that adjust when applying brakes in reverse

    Which needs to be in good working order

    I seem to have no problems with drum brakes.

    Then when I change shoes every thing gets replaced .
