Got rear ended on Monday afternoon. Taking the truck to the body shop on Friday to have it looked at. Other guys insurance is covering the repairs. Should I have it replaced with a replacement plate bumper or just the factory bumper?
Would the cost be relatively the same??

    Any help is appreciated.

So do I just ask the guys at the body shop if I can do a plate bumper instead of replacing the factory one? I assume these have to be ordered??

Lol I brake check tailgaters all the time I the hopes they hit my bumper so I can get a free plate one, hard part is finding the delicate balance between just bending up the OEM one and doing serious damage!!!

Just ask for an estimate then have the company send you a check then order from whatever company that makes one you like

Guess I need to make sure nothing else needs to be fixed or replaced besides the bumper if I just have them cut me a check. Right?

When I was lightly rear-ended about 2 years ago, they just cut me a check after their adjuster looked at it, and I was to fix it on my own. Check was for about 1300.00, which I felt was more than fair. FYI

I was rear ended two weeks ago, and have a plate bumper on order. The truck will go into the shop once the bumper arrives to have the minor body damage repaired.

    Hey Kyle...

Well, the decision is still yours, we here can't decide for you.

    But for some cheap advice...

First, make sure that the body shop finds no problems with the frame "first".

Then make sure you have the funds for what you want to do, and
in the future what you want to do with your truck.

If it is a daily driver, not off roading except beaches/sand/mudding,
OEM is plenty. If you were in Canada, I'd offer you my OEM at a greatly discounted price since its a 2012 TRD. Only 526 kms driven with it, and
looks like it belongs on a new truck :)

If your going to go off road, rock crawl, then I'd recommend a low clearance plate bumper. The swing arm option is a very nice idea too.

If fuel mileage matters, then go with a plate aluminium one. If not, a steel
    one will do fine.

Here is a link below that I looked at a long time ago, and I opted to go
with an ALLPRO plate bumper, with the wraps around the body, no cutting.
[ 2" reciever, but there is no swing arm though ]. I purchased it simply for the reasons of impact, and no body work/chopping was needed to be done, other than removing the original bumper and OEM tow hitch.

My reasons to get one was that I witnessed a rear end on a tacoma, by a honda civic, that destroyed the everything right up to the right rear tire. Civic was doing just over 75 km ( around 45 mph ) on a city street.

There was frame damage, axle, and the pickup bed. That tacoma had
6 kms on it. I was not impressed. So I went overboard, and got both
a plate rear and front bumper. I have been very satisfied with both thus far.

    Good luck..

Yes that is true (I work in insurance) but I have witnessed first hand a silverado rear ending a fellow members truck that had a plate bumper and tire gate and the silverado was totaled and the tacoma was fine it got cleared by a shop with minor scratches.

I dunno I think if you got rear ended by a civic at 75km/h you'd probably still have to do some work plate bumper or not... The car is so low and wedge shaped that it would just slide under the bumper, lift the ass end in the air, then the civic's engine would take out your diff, leaf springs, exhaust, drive shaft, and transmission...

Thats very true too also its a possibility that the vehicle would flip at that point if it was going fast enough I saw a lifted s10 do that in traffic once it got hit by a camaro.

While my Tacoma sustained about $2100 in damage, the Honda Odyssey that hit me submarined my bumper and was declared a total loss. And the visible damage to my truck is the rear bumper. Which while bent/crushed is still level and centered. There is no visible frame or undercarriage damage, the RH side of the bumper was bent forward into the Right bed side.

Anybody need to sell a chrome factory bumper. Might be interested in that as well.
