I have a 2003 extracab and I'm installing a new pioneer with reverse camera. Below is a generic pic of the wiring that came with it. I'm pretty sure I need to run the red wire on the video cable to the reverse signal going to the tail light on one end, and the other end goes to the reverse gear signal input in the other photo.

The unit supports "always on" if I tap into the power and ground in the radio harness. I like this feature as I like to shake my fist at people too close to my rear bumper at red lights.

Are these meant to be run together? Is the power coming from the radio wiring harness and the signal from the reverse signal at the same time an issue or not?

I understand this may seem elementary, but I'm just trying to plan my install accordingly.

I also understand this is a Tacoma forum and not a Pioneer forum.. lol

I have a pioneer unit with video on my 2000 tacoma. I used the yellow RCA cable with a red wire to run back to the camera on my bumper. It brings video from the camera to the pioneer unit, but also sends power back to the camera via the red wire. In the cab, I tapped into the reverse/tail light in the wiring harness under the driver's seat and ran that wire to the cavity where the radio is. Use an inline tap with a fuse when you hook into the reverse light so you don't blow anything if the camera/pioneer unit malfunction.

The typical setup: Connect the reverse light you tapped into to both the purple reverse signal and the red wire going back to the camera (so the camera is only powered when the reverse light is on).

My setup: Connect the purple reverse indicator wire on the radio to the red power wire going back to the camera. Hook those together into the middle terminal on a 2-way switch. On one end of the switch, connect to the wire tapped into for the reverse light. The other end of the switch connects directly to the 12v source at the back of the radio. This allows me to have the camera turn on only when the reverse light is on (switch position 1 - connected to the reverse light) or turn on the camera any time I want (switch position 2 - connected to the 12v radio source)

Do you remember which wire that was?

I believe it was the red wire with black stripe shown in this diagram. This picture is from a 2000 though, so not sure if it's different for '01-'04.

If you don't want to run power back up into the cab, just tap into the power wire for the reverse light in the bed. You just won't be able to do the manual switch setup like I have with that; you'll only be able to do the 'typical' setup I described above.

also, if you power off the reverse light in back, you'll likely still need to tap into the wire in the cab to connect to the purple indicator wire on the pioneer unit.

I just did this. Reverse camera and double din. With the purple and white wire to let it know I was going into reverse (manual trans) I used a test like with a pointed end. I used it to poke the wires by the kick panel. I believe it was a white with red stripe (can't remember off hand). I'd put the pickup in reverse as I was poking that wire to see which one to splice into. I used a T splice to hook that purple and white wire in there and it worked great. I also connected the power wire from the camera in the back to the reverse light of the pickup. Been working so far :) Let me know if you have more questions as it's about the same as I did. My unit is a kenwood if that makes any difference.

The RC wire has a little wire that sticks out for the signal (purple wire) for my double din so that was nice. Lol
