This must be what the OP sees in his head when he looks at his truck.

I remember something from circle track days. But that was a single leaf. Used a single leaf for lateral location and control. Leaf was too weak to support full weight. So we ran it with coil overs. That was a class requirement though. Had to keep at least one leaf to fit in the class. Totally different animal here.

I jumped on the bed left side and right side and the right side with the coils is actually softer than the fox shock side on max stiff. Driving there no noticeable diff because we want the driver side stiffer to account for driver weight. It is super stable at speed and rides like a skateboard.

Im planning a camera and mic setup for a w.o.t. run at the landfill to see the suspension in action on undulating backroads and hear the john deere tractor burble tuned exhaust at full blast

10-15 years ago the "Zuk mod" was a pretty common thing to do. Basically wedge a 12" #100 coil in between the leaf and the frame, usually giving the oldee trucks 3" of lift and adding weight carrying capacity.

Yessir. I tried that with 22k and 32k swift springs from my stance car that translates to probably 900 pound.

I did this a long time ago while I was waiting to replace the worthless factory leafs.

I happened to have some coil laying around from my old ram, so i shoved them on top of the rear bump stop.

It actually worked ok. I bet with a little more effort and fabrication, it could be a good idea

I’m more concerned about the engineering of the modifications. For example, using a shock mount point to carry the weight of the truck is sketchy; albeit it’s only a fraction of the weight if the leaf spring is left in place. A number of other design decisions also require some scrutiny. I’m confused what the goal is of combining a coil spring with a leaf spring. Couldn’t one simply install a stiffer leaf spring or weld a solid steel tube from the frame to the axle?

I don’t pretend to know what the end game is for your truck, but I’d imagine air bags would give you a more customizable and safe result side to side even if your heart so desires.

Another concern of mine is the spring rate of the coil springs. Assuming they were designed for an IFS, they will be extra stiff to compensate for the motion ratio (about 2:1 on a taco). However, on the rear solid axle suspension the motion ratio is 1:1. There’s a chance that the coil spring is carrying more load than the leaf spring which doesn’t bode well for the shock mounts.

To be done “correctly” the coil over should be mounted to some fabricated mounts on the axle and frame. There is a recent Dirt Lifestyle video on YouTube that demonstrates this idea. It’s in the one on trailing arms.

I must be really bored to be giving this thread serious thought.
