I think most people do not get too much water in the the rear diff…. The valve is doing what it supposed to do…let the heat out..keep the water out…but certain circumstances…moisture/ water can get in….
Mud can clogged the valve to remained open as someone mention…
If you do water crossing or launching a boat? Seems like a good idea to add the rear vent diff kit?

Better to be safe …cost of parts to extend rear end air vent is under $40.00 …vs replacing a rear end gears…plus labor…. $$$$
    Aloha

Tomorrow Toyota mechanic will let me know ..if I need a new rear end?

This is a no brainer to me. Get the breather out of the water, check. Did the mod to my 2nd gen and now 3rd gen. Not even a worry.

I bought the parts on ebay and a 1/4" fuel hose from parts store. Zip tied the breather up high along the fuel filler neck.

A very good idea…i notices some people install inside the gas cap housing…but can rain drip in? Or inside the rear tailgate housing ..which I like better…
Some pictures shows people using a fuel filter system…for open end . Have you seen the ARB system…?

There are factory built vehicles that are design for water crossings…most are NOT American made…?

My regular mechanic mention he has found water in rear ends of Ford trucks and Toyota trucks that visit Waipio valley farms…you need to drive thru a river…to get there…lots of wet land TARO….”Poi” is made from. A starchy local Hawaiian food…purple color…”yummy”..

For those. who may forge thru water & mud…. The rear diff vent kit is a very cheap protection…!

I will let you know what this mistake will cost me? A MOD that is rarely mention
I did talk to my regular mechanic and he will install this MOD for me…
    Toyota going cheap….

Some people will NEVER have problems with there Tacoma Trucks…and will think “highly”. For those who find the faults? Will share a different experience….
    Aloha

Can anyone tell me what these parts are and how well this works vs the “traditional” breather end?

It’s rubber gas line and an in-line fuel filter from something like a lawn mower. Kinda clever. IMO, it prob works better than the stock breather because it’s not a one-way valve.
I bought a K&N two-way crankcase filter for about $10 online and installed it with some cheap fuel line behind my tail light because I didn’t want it taking up space in my bed cubby or gas cap pocket....

Where I live …on a dirt coffee farm roads, rain a lot, mud puddles, the whole underneath is cover with mud, my mechanic hates crawling underneath…the dry mud keeps getting him dirty…

After having to put a new 3rd member in the rear end,,over $4,000 later…due to a fail diff breather…mechanic believe may had dirt or something that kept the valve open..allowing water inside..

After reading many articles…about rear diff breathers…I decided to installed the ARB diff breather, mounted in the driver side rear taillight..able to attach up to four hoses, filter, and other features, that made sense to me..
Sure it did cost a bit more…but it give me a peace of mind…knowing I have a well made diff breather..

Please everyone consider this a great MOD to protect your rear end…. And maybe keep using those face mask…protection front and rear…lol
    Aloha

I’m not familiar with the ARB kit but I’m guessing it’s the same principle but more expensive.

For me personally, I’ll never do water crossings but I’ve had trouble in the past with water getting into my rear differential in the winter time so I just wanted to swap the stock, one way breather that’s mounted low and directly on the rear axle housing for a two-way, air-filter-type breather that I could mount higher up and out of the way.......All for a reasonable price, Lol....
I prob spent a total of $35 and an hour of my time on it.

Mounting the diff breather higher…is worth doing…. I had a costly bad experience with my 2019 TRD 3rd member…
For me..I will always do this with any future 4x4 , new or use…

DIY diff breathers kits , so many options…and is a low cost MOD…. 99% of you many never go thru with what happen to mines…

Please keep sharing your MODS…. even driving thru raining streets, water puddles..snow, muddy roads..who know what can plug your one way diff valve? Even dirt & rocky roads..
Valve will open due to the heat pressures..I think? Anything that opens? Can allow things to get in?
    Aloha

Anyone source the diff hose fitting from hardware store ? Isn't it just a barbed fitting and assuming the threads are metric.

Please read about benefits of the ARB diff breathers…vs others one way valves..that may have some short comings..?

ARB is a High flow, Zero back pressure, Zero vacuum breather system, a machine billet aluminum, anodized , light weight, and resistant to the elements.. & there reputation for making great products and tested in the outback’s of Australia…. You may pay a bit more…but the benefits are more…

This is a reasonable, safe MOD…that will protect your rear end…
    Aloha

Cheap(non-fuel injected) 5/16”ID rubber fuel line fits perfectly on this barb with a SS hose clamp....

Not sure if all the one way valves work the same? There must be a good reason to have zero back pressure, zero vacuum and a very high flow valve as mention of the ARB diff breathers? Plus a filter…

Not sure how many of you ever go snorkel in the oceans…sure cheaper snorkels work almost the same…but the better ones stops water from getting in…better air flow..just better overall. I kinda like to compare it is the same for ARB diff. Breathers vs others..?
Same for air filters…. The air flows and filters do not all work the same..?
    Aloha
