I have an 18 or with 2,000 miles on it. Is it a good idea to change the rear diff fluid now or wait till 30k per the dealer?

I'm leaning towards changing it myself now but can't find the type of fluid that is used from the factory. Any one have recommendations?

    Thanks!

From what was reported in this thread, an early change seems to be a very good idea:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-manual-transmission-6mt-fluid-change.481719/

I'm a bit over 6k and will be doing it this month. After that, I will follow the maint schedule.

5k seems like a great target unless you have a few long highway drives on it, then earlier would be good. After my first long highway drive, 2hrs+ over a mountain pass, I could smell that the driveline got up to temp nicely.

went synthetic at 5k....however ECGS suggests 85w140 Lucas dino for front and rear. So went with that, going to swap once a year. It's cheap and easy to do. Dino also cools better than synthetic.

Thanks guys. I ordered the gaskets and I've already done multiple long trips of 6 hrs with the truck so think I'll change it now.

I had mine changed at 30k due to the diff seal leak TSB issue. I will swap it out with AMSOIL in about 10k miles just because I can.

    I'm sold on Amsoil.

I had a slight shutter in my Honda CRV's transmission, and I just subtracted/added 1 small bottle of Amsoil oil and the shutter completely went away. I didn't do a complete flush, just 1 tiny bottle.

    SOLD!

Idealy, you shouldn't mix oil brands but I have seen some people do that to performance transmissions and engines...

If it worked for you, great!

2K miles for a fluid change on the rear diff? How often are you doing oil changes on the engine then, every 500 miles? Just sounds like overkill to me unless you've submerged the diff in water while crossing creeks or what have you.

I changed mine at 1,300 miles to get some of the break in gunk out and to switch to Mobil 1 synthetic. There was a bit of metal on the magnetic drain plug but nothing too crazy. I'll probably do the diff oil change more often than recommended just because I'm a spaz like that.

Based on evidence on this forum, it wouldn’t hurt to do a break-in fluid change for the diffs. Anywhere from 2k to 5k is probably valid for that. Depending on the fluid that was used for fill, one could easily switch to 20k-30k (or higher) intervals based on use case after that.

Motor oil change interval is 10k on our engines which seems to be spot on.

Buy synthetic which is better than the factory non synthetic fill.

I've changed front and rear diff to Redline 75W90 GL5 at 1000 miles. The manual says 75W85 which is only for CAFE standards, you can use 75W90 both front and rear, or use the 75W85 if you're really by the book.

    https://www.redlineoil.com/75w85-gl-5-gear-oil

    https://www.redlineoil.com/75w90-gl-5-gear-oil

If you change the Tcase use straight 75W (or 75W80) and a GL4 which is preferred for the Toyota transfer case after 2014, the manual says 75W GL4.

    http://www.ravenol.de/en/products/usage/d/Product/show/p/ravenol-mtf-3-sae-75w.html

Redline makes superior auto trans and mtrans fluids, many have used these, I use the MT90. If you're asking, yes D4 is Toyota WS spec and ALWAYS use a GL4 fluid in your transmission, never put regular 75W90 GL5 gear fluid in your trans.
