Took my 2023 taco to a third dealership today to address the rear howling diff and gear noise coming from the rear at all variations of speeds. It’s not resonance like people are saying(at least on my truck) if you open the windows you can hear the rear diff making all kinds noises and humming. Anyway top tech put my truck on the lift and ran it while listening to the rear. He came back to tell me the diff is screaming and grinding internally . They ordered a new carrier assembly today and will start the job on Wednesday. Thank god at least one dealership took the time to investigate this for me.

One of the reasons I didn't trade up when I had the chance. Mine doesn't howl.

My 2021 had a howl. It was the automatic with 3.90's. My 2022 has a faint ringing/howl to it, a whole lot less than the '21 though. It has the 4.30 gears being a 6MT. Weird. They all do it in some form.

I don’t see how there could be grinding while it’s still happily driving down the road. It would also have very dirty fluid.

Obviously I can’t listen IRL but I’d make a small suggestion that too big a deal is being made out of this, but I suppose if the dealer is willing to swap the diff then it’s worth a shot if it won’t inconvenience you too badly.

I will say my stock 4.30s made no more or less noise than any other truck I’ve ever owned. Same for my now 5.29s, no more or less noise than anything else.

My '22 Taco sounds identical to my '06 T4R. The '06 whined since new, and has never gotten louder. Only from 45 to 50 mph, both vehicles. Not before, and not after...but always between those speeds. It is part of the charm! I actually listen for it. I'd be concerned if it suddenly stopped!

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
Mine howls a bit at all speeds.

it’s under warranty and will be for a while. I’ll drive it until it explodes or until they notice it at service time.

op, sounds like your issue is something other than the common rear diff whine many of us have. it'll be interesting how this turns out, keep us posted.

the rear diff on my truck whines a bit in the 50-60 MPH range. seems to occur more going downhill when coasting as opposed to pressing the gas pedal. changing the fluid to amsoil SG 75W-90 had no effect whatsoever. the noise is fairly low and for now, i plan to live with it and as long as it does not get worse, i will leave it as-is.

Can you describe your howl to me ? I’m curious what you’ll say. Mine sounds like wind noise at lower speeds but it’s actually the diff, roll windows down and you can hear coming from under the truck in the rear

As perfect as Toyota is (according to TW) it amazes me that they have so much trouble setting pinion depth at the factory.

No howling here either. Is it mostly related to one trim line, or the entire tacoma line?

Is the diff howl a 4x4 thing or are 2wd getting it too? I hear nothing out of the ordinary with my 2wd other than pretty obviously the engine humming along while cruising. Then again I fly them and lived life around jets for years and my ears aren’t what they were.
