But, what Toyota uses is NOT a breather, at least a 2-way one. They are a venting check valve, spring loaded to go shut when not venting. That means polluted air/ water will try and get into the negative pressure differential. The mod put a real breather at the end of the tube, high up.

Your totaly right with that. I guess i never had any water leak in on my past taco's. One did rust shut and did build enough pressure to push oil through the pinion seal though. That's when i did the mod. It failed at around 230,000 miles hard alot of offroading, the oil always looked good.

Everyone who might drive into water over 15" deep must understand that the thing Toyota put on top of the rear diff is not a 2-way breather. It is a spring-loaded exhaust port. Air can only exit it. The mod puts the same breather used on front diffs at the end of a hose from the rear diff, higher up. This now allows air to move out and IN.

I just did my rear diff vent relocation mod behind the driverside tail light, the hardest part was letting the spare tire down LOL.

Stock with a camper shell for now.
I may have to consider doing this, what are the benefits of doing it?

I did this as well but with the ARB breather kit, mounted behind drivers side tail light.

The factory breather location is sitting right ontop of the diff, this drastically increases the chance of water getting into the diff when driving through deep puddles and water, causing damage to the diff afterwards as you drive with the contaminate blend in it.

Any see any issues w/ zip-tying the breather hose on the rear brake lines?

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
My concern would be movement and chaffing. Question would be "why brake lines" if there are plenty of points on the frame and bed you can tie to instead?

I had the same concern. I zip tied along the run of the entire brake line to ensure enough slack and to prevent it from swinging side-to-side. I figured the brake lines are design long enough to address any articulation.
