2017 SR starting whining at 7k miles. 58 to 65 mph.
10k service I complained about it. Spent most of the day at the dealer while they looked at it. They told me 4 techs looked at it and they called corporate.... this normal...BS
So fast forward I waited to see if it would maybe settle in??? Nope
4/9/19 called Toyota and started a claim.
4/11/19 went in for my 20k service. I told the service guy about my claim. He said well we have looked at it before , lets wait to see what Toyota says.....
So as of today no reply from Toyota.
    How long should I wait?
At 63 MPH its pretty friggen loud.
This truck was so quite for 7k miles....I don't get it.

2017 is part of the TSB.... Maybe bring them this?

Edit... I guess the TSB is only for double cab

I told the service writer about the TSB he just kind of ignored me on that one. He kept saying we will wait and see what Toyota says.

Is this whine that I keep hearing about something that is very easy to identify? I'm at 4000 miles on my 19 right now and I hear some noises from all over but assume they're normal noises.

It’s a pretty distinct tone that I’ve noticed especially after I’m off the gas. The sound doesn’t bother me and I can’t feel it or anything going wrong.

Curious if the problem is just an annoying sound to people and not really a mechanical issue? If so I’m gonna leave it be.

Mine starts at 58 and get louder at 65. It is loud enough to hear over talk radio. When I let off the gas it goes away. With the cruise on it really noticeable.
I am thinking its a harmonic noise of some kind.
I also am assuming the dealer took apart the rear diff to inspect, they had it four a few hours.

Is the whine high pitched? I can hear mine when I feather the throttle

    It’s rear differential howl /from new/
Definitely a mechanical problem worth worrying about.
I’ve got a 2019, fresh from the showroom floor its done it. My dealer wants to wait for a field service engineer to listen to it before they touch it

Lame, I got it. Mine sounds like the very end of a high pitched bell being rung.

Should I call them or wait a little longer?

It’s a harmonic issue. Multiple dudes have had their diffs torn apart while they were regearing them with zero signs of bad wear/problems.

It's not a mechanical issue. It's a harmonics issue. Sounds like square cut gears when soft feathering of throttle at a certain speed.
To the people who hate the noise? Trade it or lemon law it. Your choice. There is no exact "fix" but they did put some isolators in the rear springs. Also, it is not on all trucks obviously.

Hey now that you mention that, mine never had it. But after they did they leaf spring tsb I notice it. I wonder if the better intimate contact of the springs helped transfer the harmonics. Interesting.

If it's due to square cut gears it would affect /every/ truck out there. Most of us have it but not all of us. That in and of itself points to a problem. And if it's a harmonics issue not caused by differential issues, how do you explain the people that have had their rear axle replaced and the noise only comes back after a couple thousand miles? Or the guy in this thread whom heard nothing for 7k?
I know a rear pinion howl when I hear it. If you're claiming it's something else, mind telling me what?

There ya go. About 300 pages worth on the issue. I have an SR5 so corporate and dealer refused to apply TSB. I have taken mine in 6 times for it so engineers could drive it and what not. They admitted its caused by the rear diff, but no real fix. I paid for the TSB and did it myself. It helps a little, but my howl is one of the louder ones on Tacomaworld. I put sound deadener and foam in the entire rear cab as well. Now that it is warming up again the howl is coming back to its normal range. It was so quiet during winter! haha

Dude. Read my post. I said it SOUNDS like square cut gears, not that it IS square cut gears.
It is a harmonics issue. Vibration is not limited to just the differential. It transfers to the leaf springs and everything else the leaf springs touch. And, only a small percentage of trucks exhibit this phenomenon! THAT's why they have not been able to fix it. It is not a mechanical failure. Your diff won't explode. It's a head scratcher for sure but it is what it is.
If you read the actual Diff Howl thread, you will hear that for the first several thousand miles, very few people hear it. It happens over time as components settle.
You apparently don't know a rear pinion howl because this ain't it.
Read the TSB for the double cab 3.5's. The information is in there. It has nothing to do with the mechanics and everything to do with the harmonics.

The TSB that doesn’t apply to 2019s

The noise which mine has been doing since day one. The noise that isn’t fixed by the TSB with some users. And, maybe it’s not a pinion howl, but it sure sounds like it.

TBH, who knows. All I know is that this brand new truck is lacking a lot of NVH R&D

    I’m just bitter
