Beginning to think its some sort of harmonics to, or wind noise at a certain speed. Some seem hear it others don't. I would think if harmonics coating various chassis components like the leafs may stop whatever it is. I can tell you after coating the undercarriage on my truck the road noise got quieter in the cab, but i never had the howling to begin with....at least yet.

been around a while.............ivv seen many a hot rodder seek the advantage of a gear set

way back when the ' Rock Crusher ' /whine in camaroz

the Detroit Lockers rear diffs were clunking /bangin .......................even tho set up correctly

very few mechanics know how to set the ' Lash ' on any rear end

so the line mechanics at Ur local dealer are going to be inept & reluctant

*******. long run whine is NOT good

no less there are MANY New Stock vehicles sitting on showroom floors that DONT need

Special rear diff ' Break Ins '....................that DO NOT Make Noise !!!!

3/4 .......1 ton ........ service trucks ........right up to 20000lb single axle specialty vehicles

    whinging .....clunking......bangin ......slipping is Unacceptable

what makes matters worse is the guy U r talking to more than likely CANT Help U !!!

My 19 whines horrible between 55 & 58. I hate the sound it so much and nearing my wits end with it. No one has seemed to find a fix and Toyota doesn’t care anymore. I have come close to lifts and/or MT’s but then find it ridiculous that I need to alter a $40k truck to try and get rid of a sound that should not be there.

My '17 did this around 50-45 MPH when letting off the gas. The howl was obvious. My '20 doesn't appear to make these sounds like the '17 did. I was never concerned that it was a serious issue because nobody has found any bad signs with wear and tear causing the sounds. Harmonics? Oh well, turn up the music and problem goes away!

2019 Sport did it day 1 when new and still does. There will never be a fix. Toyota does not care because we keep buying Taco's in record numbers.

Really haven't any idea. I had a drag car back in the 70's that after we setup the rear gear ratio with 4.56 zoom gears in a posi unit, it howled like s.o.b. Imo, i think it was either the gear hardness, and type of steel used manufacturing them, or the actual cut. As far as the taco's it may not even be the gears, maybe something related though. I have not heard anything like it yet in my 2020 v6 access cab, its a very quiet truck, so my guess is as good as yours.

I think I'm dealing with this but mine kinda sounds like a mix, like the annoying oscillating vibrations when you have a single window rolled down on the highway, but containing a higher pitch whine clearly coming from the rear end- is that about right? Though I could be hearing what I want to, the video above by @ARMYCA seems to reflect what I have going. Mine gets really noticeable around 45mph- and became clearer after I put a cap on my truck.

Correct me if the following isn't true: seems the consensus is that its NOT an indication of an imminent blowup of the rear diff, that trying to get a dealership to fix it is like trying to win the lottery, that maybe spraying/ messing with leafsprings will help, maybe checking/ changing rear diff fluid will help, changing the rear diff out completely might work but it's possible it'll come back after a few thousand miles.

Man- it's frustrating, but really I just want to know its not going to become a bigger problem down the road (does anyone actually know that?)

Toyota engineers need to take a perfectly good gen3 truck that has some miles that doesn't howl, and examine it carefully against one that does. I can't believe they already haven't figured it out. Imo, must be too costly to redesign something, but they'd rather leave it alone as long as no damage to the vehicle occurs.

probably just the resonator. they are designed to match the harmonics of the intake...so that could be what you are hearing. you could remove it, but it would probably reduce power.

all gear sets are NOT the same ( Dana ..... Spicer..... Detroit...... Richmond )

from inceprtion to completion there is a decided difference

the 351 Cleveland vs windsor are diff in some areas.......not in others
Not like FORD ordered 2 Diff engines

most manufacturers have more than One ( 1!! ) line o manufacturer & assembly

at General Motors many of the Olds V8s were ' Balanced ' ...................
in that parts were more closely matched le
    nth & weight

if U stand at the end of 2 lines making rods measure & weigh over several batches

U will find a variance between rods from diff lines to those on same line

some sanctions require the rods be ' Production ' ( randomly selected )...... essentially ' Numbered '

as opposed to special batch runs ( hand picked few from the many )

still askilled builder will attempt to run near same length & weight

point im attempting to make on 70s GTO is there was NO aftermarket match

some of the complaints are NOT confined to the SAME criteria

    same oil

    same tyres

    same lift

    same assembly

    void o ANY modifications

not possible to expect or obtain SAME results
