My 2017 did this around 55 mph but recently I don’t hear it anymore. Also I checked under the truck and there are no signs of a leaking differential.

I'm going to ditto the folks saying it's a harmonics issue. Started getting the noise with less than 10k miles on the truck but only after installed a GFC camper. Something about the rear suspension being ever so slightly compressed from the added weight caused the issue. When I got new leaf springs the noise went away entirely.

Some fine metal particles is completely normal in any gear set / differential from the break in period.
And from any minor burrs left from the machining process.

That's why they put magnets on the drain plugs.

It's when you start to see slivers or chunks you have to start worrying.

I purchased 2019 TRD 4X4 Sport Club Cab LB 6 speed atm, 3.5L made on 11/18 in Baja Mexico with 5700 miles on it from a dealership in South Lake Tahoe. The vehicle actually belonged to the then service manager, now general manager.
I noticed a “harmonic vibration“ that seems to be coming from under behind the driver seat. Drive line??
It’s predominant at 1500 rpm between 50-60 mph when slightly accelerating & then decelerating it’s very loud. Also, I hear it a bit less at 1500 rpm at 30 mph.
My first oil change at 10K, I asked the dealership to inspect & repair. They heard the noise during the road test. I was told, “Sorry, they all make that noise.”
So it took it to the dealership in Carson City, NV. I took an dealership employee on a road test & he said “WoW, I definitely hear that!” I left the truck there. Later that afternoon I got a call from the service rep (who never rode in the truck) telling me, “The master mechanic took it for a road test & Sorry, they all make that noise.” Also was told “I have a Leer cab high shell, it makes my noise actually louder.” BS!!!
Now I am hammering Toyota corporate. They told me that it’s just a “engineering flaw”& there’s nothing they can do. I told them look up flaw in the dictionary, I bet DEFECT is in the definition.
I Just found this TSB online & gave it to Toyota Customer Service rep.

Toyota needs to fix this problem.
I had a 2006 Tacoma Sport 4X4 for 14 years. I also have a 2016 Highlander. I am a Toyota loyal customer & I am not happy with this truck at all!!!!
Anyone have a 2019 with this issue & actually had it fixed???

I just was blown off by Toyota Corporate customer service for the last time!
They told me to remove my camper shell & bring the truck back to the Carson City dealership for a another road test. They also want me to drive a comparable Tacoma to prove to me that ALL Tacoma’s like mine have the same vibration.
I contacted a Lemon Law legal firm & he advised me to do what Toyota requested.
I advise anyone else that’s frustrated with the same problems to contact
    “Lemon Law Group” (888)966-8183.
They have 41 offices in the USA & all is handled online. If you win, it’s a refund, replacement or a cash settlement.
This will get Toyota off their ass & find a fix.

My 2019 does the same thing. I’m fed up with Toyota! I consulted a Lemon Law attorney. I’d advise you to give them a call.

It's known that properly running gears may whine and engineering goes into gears solely to address NVH issues. This indicates certain noises are zero cause for mechanical or operational concern. Noise, especially something like a whine under very light load at a specific speed, is known not to be an indication of a mechanical problem, other than a noise issue.

I think the lack of samples of broken, failed, or exploded diffs and axles is indication that this is not a problem. If there were mechanically failed diffs at any kind of rate it would be all over this board. This diff has been in this 3rd gen truck since 2015, logged hundreds or thousands of millions of miles in total, and started in other applications before it got here. It's fine.

The noise is extremely irritating & should not be there in any $40K brand new vehicle.

Curious...what leaf springs did you install?

Just thought I would add my $.02 here....

I have a 2020 Off Road. I drive a lot, and it already has a bit over 30K miles on it.

I noticed an intermittent whine from the rear diff starting at about 10K miles. It continued for some time....I would just hear it occasionally, but it never went away. At right about 30K miles, the whine had gotten perhaps a bit louder, but was still intermittent and hard to predict as to when it would occur. But what also started, was a sound I would describe as more of a "howl", and it was dead predictable. It would appear between 55-60 MPH, on either a steady throttle, or during slight acceleration/deceleration. I knew now the dealer could not easily blow me off with "could not confirm noise", so I brought the truck in.

They confirmed the noise and drained the diff. They found the oil black and full of metal particles. So as we speak they are installing a new diff.

I am reporting this, because I have read countless internet accounts of diff whine/howl on late model Tacomas, along with an assurance that "it's just harmonics" "they all do that" or "it's not a mechanical problem". Not necessarily true.

Sounds like worn gears, my 2000 Ranger with 200k miles does the same but it has a lot of millage, the whining/howling noise is really noticable between 43 -48mph.

I wonder(my assumption, presumption) if it's the quality of the gears and/or any parts associated with that goes out of spec that creates the "possible" worn gearing parts? But I assume Toyota Techs would check the specs and tolerances to see if anything failed prematurely. I would also assume Toyota could inspect the ring/pinion for visual wear and start to narrow down the noisy problem, they should by now. Just tear down the rear end and inspect everything, they should have engineers on the payroll

    Just my opine and Guessing.

If that 65mph OEM harmonic howl is bad just regear to 4.88s and it’ll go away....oh wait, still there....

I just got my 2020 back with new diff installed.

The conditions (speed/throttle) under which it whines/ howls are different than with the original diff, but it definitely still whines and howls. If anything, I would say louder than before. This morning it emitted a noise I could only describe as a shrill scream...

WTF Toyota? We don't buy your products to deal with this sort of nonsense, at least I don't.

Mine has the high pitch whine, too. I have an automatic. It happens around 2000 rpm in a low gear when the engine is loaded. It clears after a couple hundred rpm. Like a lot of folks, mine didn't start right away. It started after I pulled my pop up camper for the first time. I'm with the group that says it has to do with harmonics. The noise seems to be from all over. I don't feel like it is a major mechanical problem. Mine doesn't last for any real length of time, so I just ignore it. If it were continuous, it would drive me nuts. I have been curious if it will go away if I install an AAL.

Just get the body mounts from the TSB. Takes 10 min to put on and will reduce the noise to a tolerable level. Don’t bother with diff swap or other shit as it does nothing. I have a 2019 OR and don’t even hear the harmonic tone unless I really listen for it after adding the mounts.
