Also makes finally put my rear and front gears and lockers in

of course part of the labour would be great :p

A good set of after market gears should be a lot stronger than oem. I had my first set get destroyed and they were replaced with toyota oem's by the warranty and they didn't last very long before they started whining and had that chip in them, no wheeling involved with either. Was on factory sized michelin all terrains and paved roads in both cases even. I payed for the 4.88's from East coast gear supply and have my 33's now. Have only done minimal wheeling though, but have pretty heavy on the throttle lately around town with no issues.

I will say that I did drive all the way to Moab and back (about 400 miles one way) and wheeled a ton there all on my 33" KM2's. I think the whining got a little worse after that, but the gears did survive that even though they were whining.

And? I'm on my third R + P and the truck is under 30,000 miles.

Usage differences exist. Trading personal experience doesn't get us much of anywhere. We need to look for trends, and if you head over to TTORA the trends are very clear.

Oh yeah, I was going to mention that I had less than 13,000 miles on mine when the first went. I was stopped on a paved road and punched it and goodbye ring and pinion... Basically bone stock Taco.

That's pretty normal. There is a little play in all that stuff so that it doesn't bind up real bad under hard force.

I'd pull the drain plug and see what has collected on the magnet. Fine wear particles that look like fuzz on the magnet are normal, but any flakes or chunkies are a bad sign.

Can you feel any end play or radial play in the pinion bearings by shaking the flange / driveshaft? If you get any movement (other than rotation) you've found the source of your noise.

this may not be very comparable (8.4 rear), but my standard cab fell under a TSB for a rear diff whine. of course, mine was out of warranty and i could not shell out 2400 for the work. i have been driving mine now for 30K miles with this whine.

dont know if its too late but check your drive line and u-joints, if one ujoint is lose/ broken it tends to throw off balance the drive line and make a huge humming sound.

Change the oil first with heavier viscosity and see what happens. More than likely that much whine, you have too much backlash and the gears are binding up against each other. It'll be only a matter of time before the ring or pinion shear off.

My stock gears have held up pretty well. I have been S/C'd since 283 miles, towed well over it's rated limit multiple times around town and from CA to AZ. Also have 33's and a 3" lift. Done some wheeling and solid like a rock.

It's been mentioned, but I'll reiterate that changing oil might buy you some time. I would use a 75-140. The thicker the oil film the better. A product like Redline shockproof might help too. I have seen noisey diffs run a long way. You just never know.
