I have filed a complaint with the U.S. DOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; 4/15/2017. Stressed "safety" as the major concern.

My Toyota dealer also opened a case with Toyota Corp; 3/9/2017. Stressed "safety" as the major concern.

Noise is now heard: 30-65 mph.

This is the only way Toyota is going to take notice; when it comes to safety!

Can you elaborate on the unsafe part?

Could potentially experience a catastrophic failure leading to the differential locking up; potentially causing an accident/injuries.

This happened to me with a 1987 Ford Ranger back in 2008. Skidded to a stop in the middle of a four-lane highway.

The Highway Patrol pushed me off the hwy; the truck was flat-bedded to the repair shop. After being pushed, all four Michelin tires had flat spots on them, and they could not be trued. Ended having to replace the Michelins along with the differential.

So yes, I’ve experience this “safety” issue first hand.

Interesting the scenario you described has already happened to several folks here. One guy had a Wipeout on the 110 freeway in Los Angeles because his third gen rear end failed and locked up

Best of luck with this. I have filed tons of these things over the years and have never hear single thing back. I wouldn't stay by the phone waiting if I were you and would spend most of my time staying on corporate if your issue is not resolved. I heard someone in another forum say they think a fix is coming but we will see. Mine just started after the truck was about a month old. This really sucks, especially when you consider Toyota was talking so much smack about fixing the second gen driveline vibration issues on the third gen only to leave us with a howling diff and a host of other things from what I hear from others. I love my truck and the howling diff is all I have so I'm holding out for a fix, hopefully sooner than later. Hang in there...

I hope we can get some of this up here in Canada.
From what the dealer has told me US TSB do not work up here.

So you're saying you're 19 year old ranger (at the time) sounded exactly like the Tacoma? And you're 100% sure the diff will fail soon and for your safety the tacoma is parked until a solution is found?

Or your not 100% positive and you're driving the tacoma putting others around you in severe risk?

Drive the vechicle, monitor the situation, if the noise gets louder and more persistant, then get concerned.

    Annoyance, yes. Safety, um, no.

Every single car I owned, toyotas, bmws, audi, dodge, nissan, etc... if you spend enough time on forums, the world is crashing and your car will have a catastrophic failure like a few people have had. It will cost 5-10k to fix, leave you stranded, or put you in grave danger.
