OEM breather end is a check valve. The one pictured is a simple gas filter. You can use a filter in an area that is not going to be subjected to any submersion. The check valve has to be installed upright.

Thank you! That gave me enough info to find what I needed.

when putting the breather in the bed box, is there a benefit to using a fuel filter like pictured?

Not sure if there's a benefit. That guy had a cap so his bed is fully enclosed and dry. I would probably go check valve as the Toyota engineers intended. Relocatings main benefit is getting the check valve out of the dirty, rusty area on top of the dif which can make the check valve hang open and allow water intrusion.

because if the bed goes underwater, you probably have bigger problems…know your limits. I put mine in the cubby as well

But if water is in the bed past the storage cubby then water is way into the engine area. So does it really need to be as high as possible?

Is there any real down side to having it in the rear light area? It can’t be seen or checked on, without removing the tail light.

I think the idea is a narrow, but deep, type crossing or a mud hole you get well into…but not quite out of. Both those scenarios have the ability to put the rear end under water without the truck being level underwater.

Since the tail can dip deep in certain scenarios, as the cost to get it higher is just a few extra feet of hose, why not plan for worst case. It won’t always help, but it could.
