with the unreliable nature of these rear diffs I'm getting worried about adding my lift
from what the dealer told me, lift will void all driveline warranty, including differential. Which to me is a huge fuckin cop out to void the whole diff over a 2" lift

I wonder what toyota corporate would say if I asked them directly.

I bought the truck brand new, never carry any heavy load, go off road nor excessive speed. I live & work in Silicon Valley, duh!

The 2016 Tacoma is a replacement for my 1999 Tacoma Extended cab with only 92,000 miles on it. I sold that Tacoma in excellent condition to a friend of mine. He was happy like a kid when I asked him for $4,500.

First major snow storm hit this weekend in Update NY dumping 20 inches of snow, and a little bit of wet snow caking up in the rear bumper prompted the Blind Spot monitoring system to fail. Waiting for a thaw so the snow will melt out and maybe it will remedy itself. If not its cold calling the dealership and dealing with their runaround. I actually purchased a 100K warranty as the 3rd Gens have some much more crap(worthless electronics nobody really needs) to break on them then the early 2nd Gens. Ill probably get push-back from the dealer on the warranty too. Will let you guys know how i progress. 5K miles so far and the glove box doesn't seem to want to stay shut either. 40K + for a glove box that wont stay closed...its almost like the engineers were passed out on this one

I seem to recall one poster claiming the dealer would not cover his BSM under warranty because there was mud in the bumper/around the sensor area from "off roading" you'll probably be fine if it's just snow.

I'd have to guess that Toyota Canada, would say exactly the same thing. You have potentially modified driveline angles. I would think you'd have more look at the dealer level. They have more to gain by fixing an issue if warranted. Money paid to them, and a happy customer, win win.

I'd go for the lift and not worry. Just personally check your diff fluid in case low and change it out to something known for quality.

The limited has the smaller ring gear right? If so, i believe this means we have examples of both the smaller 8" rear and and the newer 8.75" rear end failing. Anyone else confirm that?

Ok so the blind spot fixed itself after the snow melted out of my bumper. I actually called the dealership and told them about it, of-course they had no idea and said bring it in 2 weeks out. Then they called me back and gave me an excuse that their dealership caught on fire or something and told me to go find another dealership to do the warranty work. Real nice

It says it right in the owners manual, that a buildup of snow/dirt/mud will stop the bsm from working. And the dealership catching on fire sounds like a pretty valid excuse to tell you to go elsewhere? Am I missing something?

I have the howling diff. Everytime I read stuff like what's in this thread it makes want to get rid of my Tacoma and get a 4Runner. I don't trust my truck and I know it's a matter of time before it fails. Your diff should not howl as loud as mine does or howl at all, period. It's howling for a reason-something is wrong.

I tend to agree. We have seen a handful of them fail already but not enough to definitely tell the howling diff was a direct symptom of the failure. I'd take it in to your dealer get it documented and open a case with corporate. Push them for an extended warranty if and when the time comes. If it does fail you'll be covered. The downside is failure could be a safety issue. If it does fail on the freeway or in traffic for instance. Dependability /reliability if you are out far from civilization becomes an issue too. Not a good feeling to have for a new truck.

That has always been my thought too, the howling means something is not normal. Also, some guys here have it while others do not which again points to something not normal.

It's either an angle/pitch issue or a gear preload issue is my bet

    ***Update***

So as you know I was suspicious of the nosie after new pod was intalled and was convinced I was just being paranoid. I guess not. 3000 kilometers later which is less than 2000 miles I couldn't deal with noise any more. I'm at the dealer and they've confirmed I need a new rear end. Won't let me drive truck as they said it's ready to "lock up". God I want my old 2nd gen back! There is shrapnel in the diff housing. Lots of it. They are saying the tech that installed pod is a 20 year veteran and the best of the best. I believe them. This wasn't residual debris from original shredding of ring and pinion.
