If towing that weight did your rear end in mine is doomed. I tow a Camper that's around that same weight.

Holy crap. That's more snow then we have all winter in western Canada. Haven't even attempted to start my snowblower.
Good luck on the warranty claim.

I like how you think but NOBODY touches my Honda. NOBODY. It's my "other" baby. <--- Read: Tacoma is my baby.

OP has a limited with AT, I think it's the same as the 2nd gen ... which is weird, since extra $$ for Limited.

Setting backlash and pinion depth requires, at least; a 95% assembly, 90% disassembly and 100% reassembly.
I just don't see corporate paid service techs investing the required time to do it right.
    Good luck, nonetheless.

why would they not provide a loaner? isnt the drive train an extended warranty and how would that not be covered with a loaner?

You don't need to be going fast to break a ring and pinion..... you need the gears in a bind and enough torque applied.

Exactly why I was hoping for a complete rear axle / differential assembly. I rather them overlook tightening a shock or a leaf pack then messing with backlash. Again if it is done wrong it will fail fast. It will not last past the warranty so should be covered. That's the only thing I can hope for.

If the tech is good, it'll probably be more correct than from the factory. I can't help you here...... I'd just look at the housing real close with a good light.

I have to think they can handle it. But the last time my AC went out on the old Tacoma I explained to the tech I had heard a hiss and then it got warmer and warmer (the air from the vents). He then took the next 6 hours looking for an electrical issue because the compressor wasn't turning on. I knew there was a low pressure switch so just assumed he had bypassed it or something?!?! In the 6th hour he came to me to explain there was no refrigerant in the system. No SHIT! They didn't charge me because of the screw up. Then when I got home I had the hood open for some reason and laying on the hood rain channels inside the engine compartment were the high and low pressure caps. Yes I know they're just dust caps and I know it's an honest mistake. But if you have a brain fart on a differential it's much more serious.

I just don't understand why people are shredding this guy apart, he had his diff fail; hasn't he been through enough? Half the people in this forum get hung up on pointless crap that has nothing to do with the matter at hand. If they had any technical knowledge they would have realized that the 4H 4L argument is a non-factor...

Boy... Absolutely possible for something like this to happen. As somebody had mentioned most likely a bad heat treat. It could be that some of this damage had existed already and this was just the final straw, the ring and pinion did not match, weak steel popped. You have to remember this stuff is cast not extruded, and any number of things could have gone wrong. You could have had cold shrink in the process, porosity in the casting, a myriad of things that just did not get caught during QA. Let's not forget the big dodge recall for the left tie rod cracked straight from the manufacturing process. And for the guy wondering about four wheel drive to get into and out of driveways. Where I live sometimes it's needed for both, in fact I just drove over 1,500 miles in 4-wheel drive. And by the way, 4 low should never be or go-to, it should always be your last resort. If you're getting yourself into situations that require you to go straight to 4 low you're doing it wrong. Basically looks like he just got a bad part. Luckily for him, it failed under warranty. Definitely look up all of the things that can possibly go wrong with cast iron because essentially that is what we are dealing with.
