Rear differential drain plug part number

    Tried searching and can't find a solid answer. I'm going to change the fluid in my rear differential soon and I know the head of the drain plug is banged up from dragging over rocks so once I get it out I'm going to want to change it out for a new plug. Does anyone know the part number for the drain plug? Is it 90341-10011?

    Buy a 90341-18035, big magnet, smooth head w/ 10mm hex. Crush gasket is 12157-10010.

    Those are Toyota parts? What are they from? I don’t like the hex head. Gets crud and rust in there and then easy to strip upon removal.

    Those are factory parts, the 18035 has multiple apps. The hex works well on the axle drain as it is smooth and doesn't easily become chewed up. A dab of grease or rust proof spray wax keeps them all steel and easy to remove.

    If you want to stay with the 24mm type, order a 90341-18040.

    Wish we had this post started a couple weeks ago when I set out on my own to find this plug using the TW search bar. I was unsuccessful.... changed my rear diff oil yesterday and reused the original plug with a new crush Washer.
    I know it’s not the plug on the right in this picture. (Part 90341-24014) Ordered it thinking it was the right part. It’s sitting next to the original rear diff drain plug...
    what did I order???

    FWIW, I dislike the stock 24mm hex bolts (like on the right). They round off, they get boogered on rocks, junk builds up in the guard ring so fitting a socket get tough. I've had a corner of one get caught on a rock and loosen enough to weep gear oil.

    So I replace them with the 10mm Allen key type (on the left).

    These are internal Allen key plug numbers:

    Drain (magnetic) plug: 90341‑18021
    Fill (non-magnetic) plug: 90341-18016

    Gaskets are the same regardless.

    Crush gasket for aluminum (transfer case, manual transmissions): 90430-18008
    Crush gasket for steel (diffs): 12157-10010

    Ok you make good points. Those are the very reasons I’m in the situation I’m in with wanting to replace the plug with a new one. So just to confirm, the original plug is number 90341-18040 but the recommendation is to replace it with 90341-18035? What then is the number you provided of 90341-18021?

    The original small magenet 24mm is a 90341-18057.
    Small magnet 10mm hex is 90341-18021
    Large magnet 10mm hex is 90341-18035

    Thank you. This is why TW is the best place. The general consensus is that 90341-18035 is the best replacement then I’m gathering?

    The question would be whether or not it contact the ring gear. If it does not then it would be OK. I don't know that it's necessary, I run a short magnet and between changes I doubt I could measure the amount of debris building up. It's like a pixie dusting at most.

    That’s my concern as well. If the stock one is short probably best to stay with the short, in this case 90341-18021.

    They will fit the drain, in the past, Toyota spec'd the 18040 for various Land Cruisers and a few mini trucks.

    Of course, if you want to try and bottom out, there is always the porno sized 90341-18044 from the old 90's twin turbo Supra.
