I have a '16 OR 4WD and changed my rear diff fluid with M1 75w/90 as well at 1000 miles, it took just over 4.2 quarts. My fluid looked dirty, when I changed the front it was the same, but I would hold off on the transfer case, mine looked brand new. Also, after changing the transfer case fluid I developed a small leak, not sure if it was the thinner fluid, but I tightened one of the lower bolts on the t-case and leak disappeared.

I drove my XJ 180,000 miles and only changed the rear diff fluid once. And the only reason I did that was because I sunk it in a river.

Leave it alone and let toyota fix it. Change fluid and they find out you could be screwing yourself out of a warranty

Yea, the fluid old fluid is hard to describe. It did look dirty, but not worn/old dirty, kinda like clean fluid with fine black "graphite" in it. It did have a metallic shimmer in the sun.

The only reason I'd swap the transfer case now is to run the synthetic.

You going to use GL4 or GL5 in the transfer case?

I’ll be changing mine at 10k, wish I had done it at the 5k to get those break-in shavings out but no worries, better late than never.
The less friction, the quieter, smother and arguably better gas (a 10th lol) mileage you'll likely to get with clean fresh oil change.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

    Right on.
I was that close to using MT90 in the transfer case. I chickened out and bought LF. Next time...

Factory gear oil in the differential is synthetic GL-5 75W85.

I'm not sure if the transfer is synthetic or not, or if it is GL-4 or GL-5. I don't have the specs on the Toyota Gear Oil LF 75W.

It's the ring and pinion, I was a drivetrain mechanic for almost 20 years and we saw it all the time. Not really going to hurt anything just annoying

There is a "sweet spot" where the ring and pinion will operate with little to no noise. This setting is usually engraved on the head of the pinion gear as a + or - sign. Plus the standard depth setting, or minus the standard depth setting for THIS PARTICULAR set of gears to operates the most quietly. Once the pinion depth is set (usually by a shim behind the pinion gear or behind the pinion gear bearing race) the only remaining setting is backlash between the ring an pinion gear.

It's NOT rocket science. All you need are the correct tools and an IQ above 85 or so and you can do it. THERE IS NO REASON FOR A RING AN PINION SET TO HOWL IF CORRECTLY SET. "Correctly set" includes inspecting the carrier and housing for runout.

The factory dropped the ball for those owners saddled with a howling rear. IT IS NOT NORMAL.
