It doesn't matter. Just get the correct rating and weight. I hate these threads

But but but, if I don't by exactly the right (whatever) my truck might blow up! Or something.

Go to the store, go to the oil section, pick any that has the right weight rating. Done. 99.99999999999999999999999% of the difference between the brands is marketing.

I used to work with a guy that did bottling. The only thing they changed between name and store brand was the color of the bottle.

My father was the lead driver for flying J fuel. Flying J fuel, idenical to Loves, identical to about a dozen others. They all got in the same line, filled from the same tanks. The only difference was whichever refinery was the cheapest that day because thats where they all filled up from. Usually that was either Denver or Salt lake. No magic involved, no special ingredients. Just x thousand gallons and back on the road. Half the time the 'good' and the 'bad' brands come from exactly the same truck, same load. All the "burns cleaner" statements are meaningless marketing.

    ^^^Definitely this^^^
I too drive trucks and deliver freight to the "Racks" on a weekly basis. Every "brand name" fuel truck all lined up in the same line to pull from the same tanks....it's just marketing hype.

There are, however, brand-specific additives and detergents added when the gasoline is transferred to the tanker truck (last step).

We are supposed to use straight SAE 90W for hypoid differentials... I have no idea where to buy this. I went to the dealership to see if they had some for sale and the salesman said they use bulk 80W-90, for all Toyota differentials, unless otherwise specified. WTH???

The repair manual says you can use 80W-90 if the temperature is below 0 deg F. This is all I have ever used because it is all I can ever find, and I am not real comfortable doing it especially when the ambient temp is 100+ in the summer where I live. Having said all this, I have over 250,000 miles on my rear diff without any issues.

    To sum it up:
I have absolutely no answer to your question, but I am here in case someone else has some sound advice.

^Toyota specifies the minimum in the owner's manual, with the assumption that straight SAE 90 is the least costly and easiest to mfr. 80W90 is considered better than straight 90 because it flows better (like straight 80) when cold, and still behaves like straight 90 at operating temp. Generally any oil with the first number lower than 90 and the second number equal to- or higher than 90 would work. 75W90 (common synthetic grade) would work, as would 75W140.

Even 80w-90 is hard to find around me, at least. I usually just put 75-90 in everything.

It is tough to get 80W90 in my area too. I can find barrels of SAE 90 at Tractor Supply, but it specifically states "not for use in hypoid differentials" or something like that. So I guess that option is out. I use 75W-90 in my transmission, xfer case and front diff, but I have always been curious where to find SAE 90 for our application. If the dealership doesn't even use SAE 90, maybe 80W-90 is okay. Maybe I am just fixating too much on what the manual says.
