I've got about 30k kms on my 2020 OR, had a bit of howl since new basically. I can only hear mine at highway speeds, around 80-90 km/h is most prominent. Above 100 and it gets quieter. With windows shut its hardly noticeable and any music you don't hear it at all. No issues so far.

Yea, now if he was a Marketing Expert that would change everything. As an engineer myself I run across DIY’rs with no formal education who are analytical, smart and clever. It’s not all about the degree. Experience in the trenches with someone with a good head on their shoulders oftentimes can come up with a better solution.

I understand and agree. In this case, it's hard to fix resonance. My Tacoma had it.

Mine does it... it's annoying. But only when the radio is turned off. Which is very rare.

I've had 2 3rd gens, both with this noise.

The howl was louder in the 16 OR than in the '19 Sport. The lessening of the effects of resonance is probably due to mitigation efforts done by Toyota in production such as sound deadening in the cab, mods to cab mounts, changes to the leaf packs etc, that we first saw as a TSB for older trucks.

For those who have never heard it, well that's great! It does exist though, just saying.

I mean it's possible, but some owners reported having the noise basically right off the lot or shortly after taking possession.

Mine howl's at 55-57ish mph. I am on my 3rd rear diff. 1st one at 5k, noisy, rear locker wasn't working and it would get stuck going in/coming out of 4LO. 2nd one at 15k for the same issue but less noise. 3rd one started quietly howling about 1800miles in and is still the same at 25k miles. 4wd works and diff has no metal in oil so it is what it is.

    A few.
The Toyota tech who has a youtube channel thats been posted on here before recently did a video on the FJ Cruiser and stated that some of them had a howling issue as well. I owned a 2007 FJ for 3 years and dont remember hearing any howling with mine. I did end up with the transmission shudder he mentions after 100,000miles.

Customer states my Toyota FJ Cruiser makes noises. Common Problems? - YouTube

I've owned 6 Toyota 4x4 manual trucks starting in 1981. Every one of them had a diff howl. The e lockers seem to be a little more noticeable. I swear, if it didn't do it I'd be worried. LOL.

I’m having the same issue. So there’s a chance it comes back after diff replacement? :( Mine happens around 45mph

Mine does not howl. However, the backlash seems higher than other vehicles I’ve owned. If backlash is too great, any gear set will howl. I wonder if they’re just adjusted loose from the factory.

I was driving in the snow recently with really unaligned tires and a Check Vehicle Stability control alert popped up and won't go away. I have been driving with the icon on for the past couple of days and it works fine but the traction control light is constantly on and I'm wondering what it could be from.

Theres a million threads on this..... that being said... Bought mine at 52k and had the howl straight away. Bigger tires and exhaust fixes that though.

I had it bad, CPO 2019 6MT bought at 21k miles. I took it to the dealer they said it's normal.

I changed the rear diff fluid at 30k, I only drained 3.1qt out, short of 1qt.

Filled 4qt full synthetic fluid, it got substantially better.
