    Hi there.

Today I am grateful to be alive! As I was heading to work this morning my rear diff locked up and threw me into a fish tail spin while I was doing 55 MPH on the 110 fwy here in LA.

Luckily my upstate NY muscle memory kicked in. I handled the spin and safely stopped. Also got lucky that I didn't hit anything.

Has this happened to anyone else? I have not found anything on this yet.

    Thanks and beware!

    Larry

Not hitting anything on the 110 fwy during rush hour while spinning is hard to believe.

Glad you or no one else got hurt during this ordeal. Keep us posted on what the dealer finds. I assume you did have it towed to the dealer.

For real, that freeway is terrifying. You need a turbo or supercharger just to get onto the freeway from those tiny ass on-ramps.

Glad you're okay OP, I've never heard of that happening before. With all the rain we've had too these last few days, that's scary for sure. Odd that it happened on a brand new truck...

I guess the answer to "is it possible to lock the rear diff while in 2wd on a 3rd gen" is.....yes?

I was just talking with a co worker mechanic about this tonight. We have both seen this happen several times and it usually results from an extreme lack of differential fluid from the factory.

Wait a second... a locker locking in caused you to lose control? Were you accelerating hard around a turn? Going straight at constant speed I don't see how it could cause that. All it does is makes both tires move the same speed, which they would be doing already. I've driven with an always locked axle and never had any issue except tight turning. Sounds more like a brake locked up or something that stops momentum on one side.

Man, you'd think it would be noisy AF for some amount of time before it exploded though. And his truck is a 16. I'd be more inclined to believe the fluid leaked over time.. If I was believing this thread at all

Locked up as in catastrophic failure, not rear locker engaging

Glad you're ok OP! Did you take it straight to the dealer for warranty?

I would hope no one would go this low for a troll.

OP's info shows he has a TRD Sport (no factory e-locker). If I read the 1st post right, the diff didn't lock up like the e locker locks the diff, it locked up as in stopped allowing it to rotate thus locking up the rear wheels like pulling the e-brake.

Glad you are OK. Did you have the howl ? This could really cause a recall if they believe it is not a one time fluke.
