My 15lb cat does that on my back if I lay on my stomach on the bed without a shirt on....it's basically a free back massage every day after work. It's awesome. Just have to make sure I keep his claws trimmed.

This dude is on to something. But, unfortunately having the story you have doesn't help your issue Every year we see this happen at least once. People freak out and bang through their gears. I've seen one come through the back. Should be proud of yourself ...or her. Don't take it out on her. I encourage my wife to drive mine Get comfortable with it. If she did this to mine, I'd fix it....upgraded parts...and move on

As for you all that say the dealership is taking them over the coals....you obviously don't or havent worked at a shop. Toyota doesn't sell a fully assembled rear axle. Each and every part has to be assembled. Bearings pressed in, axles reassembled, brake and electric lines moved over. You completely rebuild one and then you have the right to bitch. Want to save money? Buy all the individual parts and go for it. My opinion, find a used one.

I was thinking about this a bit more last night, does anyone else find it odd that the ring gear seems to be the point of failure, and so catastrophic? If it were just a bunch of mangled teeth I would be more inclined to say operator error but to see the ring gear come apart like that I would assume the spider gears to explode first to help jam up the assembly and in the picture they look OK. Its really tough to make a good opinion without seeing the whole assembly, I would like to see the axle shafts and pinion gear.

Again I have not been a technician for over a decade and I never did any differential work except for the one we rebuilt in school so my opinion isn't coming from a lot of experience, if anyone else who's dealt with more rear ends (boom phrasing), could chime in it would be helpful.

It is the almighty chicken and egg concept. What failed first? Once the teeth break off and start flying around, they in theory could jam into the gears and break. Orrrr....the spider gear exploded and the teeth break. Orrrr....something broke inside and then was driven. And then break

Since ring gears are not cast, no, there’s litterally no possibility that the casting was bad.

The simple fact is ring/pinion are designed to be strongest driving in the direction the vehicle goes 99% of the time. Forwards. Chipping or breaking teeth normally happens from rapid loadeding/unloading on the gears. But again going forwards. The gears are significantly weaker when driving in reverse. This is the same reason you shouldn’t recover a stuck vehicle by driving your vehicle in reverse. In the end it’s not really surprising to me to see the damage based on the OP. She really must have sent it in reverse though.

People use the term cast way too loosely. I saw “cast aluminum fender flares” the other night.

So... no traction, wheel spin, traction, boom. This keeps many mechanics busy through the winter. A ring and pinion gear set is inherently weaker in reverse for several reasons.

I bent the housing on my 2nd Gen in an accident just outside of the spring saddle and priced a used one from a salvage yard for about $800 cad. Ended up straightening it with some creativity.

I realy doubt it was going forward then reverse again. There are threads on here of guys doing it and it will not shift into reverse. It only turns on the backup cam

At what speed though. Also, does the trajectory of the piece that came flying through indicate forward or reverse operation? I'm not educated enough on differential functions aside from basics.
