lol nice. Yeah, can’t use keyboard emojis in TW. They either translate funny or just don’t show up at all.

my attempt at the same thing (iPhone) —> ‍♂️

Edit; Cool does the same lol

At 33k now so if I subtract the multiple trips I made to Maryland and back this year probably between 18-20k.

Like someone said earlier, either I need to upgrade the axel, stop driving how I drive, or trade it for something else... Leaning towards the latter.

There are several 'rods' in there. It's a round hole. I would think that seems correct.

You could take the ring gear to a metallurgist and see if they can identify why it failed. You may be able to convince Toyota that there was a pre-existing issue with the gear. Might be worth a shot.

Wish I could've seen the gear oil at 30k (manufacturer's recommended flush/fill time) right before the blow out. Would've been a good insight into whether it was low, contaminated, or if there was signs of things breaking down (metal shavings/chips).
I'd like to be a fly on the wall of the shop that took it in afterwards too to see the extent of the internal damage.

Oh well. No idea. Most often cause of failure is lubrication, i.e. not enough fluid. If you do end up picking up another one, I'd check the fluid and make sure it's at the proper level. If not, then there's a problem all the way back to assembly/manufacturing. Could've just been a bad batch of underfilled differentials. No way to know unless you went out and checked everything they have on the lot lol

All the Toyota tech needs to do is plug the truck in and read the data. The EDR will spill the beans on what one has been doing with the truck.

60k is the recommended flush fill time, not 30k

I believe it’s just the brakes that mimic a LSD? Correct ?

Yes, so how will that bind? It's an open diff.

Exactly, I don’t like to point fingers but this sounds like abuse. Seems odd to have 2 grenade like this.

The two in a row at relatively low mileage is the killer for me, and likely Toyota’s thinking too.

This shit blows my mind too. The only thing I can think of is I have a crazy steep driveway and always back up it. Nothing else in my mind seems to indicate that this would happen other than gunning it on occasion. Never go from reverse to drive quickly either. 95% of my driving is on pavement and I don't tow anything yet.

I'll ask if I can get pictures of the old diff when I pick the truck up on Thursday and maybe get a copy of the computer data as well.

Yeah, I agree. Don’t think we are digging on you, just happens a lot where people
join and talk about how they broke something. Far more times then not, they left some major details out.

It’s def possible and I’m sure everyone else is looking forward to some final results. Most never come back, leading to more suspicion that it was abuse. Like the came here for sympathy or an angle to work with the dealer to get over.

Again, very possible that’s not the case with you. You would be in the minority though.

It has the same brake actuated simulated LSD as the other models so there is nothing in there to bind up.

The ELSD could engage, and, with enough force, shatter the differential spider gears/shafts as the torque attempts to feed to the wheel with traction. There are quite a few examples of 200 Series Land Cruisers blowing the inner CV joint when the ELSD activates.... seems plausible that we could be seeing this with the 8" diff on the Taco.

With brand new brake shoes? I'd imagine they'd lock up pretty good, sure not as much as a true LSD or a locker, but still. Over time constant metal fatigue could result in catastrophic endings.

Seems like rear end failures are pretty low in general, cant recall but only seeing a few over the years, the simulated LSD set up is pretty durable.
