The u joints should have broken before the gearcase .... I'd tell the the dealer to show me in the user manuals where and what is says for max rpm when stuck in snow .... it's not there ...

most traction rear ends used by Toyota are the Torsen type

the more torque tighter they lock up .................... a diferent type of locking rear end
    essentially in constant mesh
there is some ( very little ) or there would be No release allowing it the ' differential "

major disadvantge is using when rock crawling
if one wheel same axle gets blocked
    something could break

in mud .......... snow etc very few liabilities
they are also like many other features biased to going forward
true toyota as well as many others go backwards on occasion yet 99 44/100%
    its forward

most limited diffs by dana , eaton , spicer tho different are also so biased

they are reliable and very low maintenance.......... be sure fluid levels are correct
    they seldom wear or overheat

in this scenario it was stated wheels were spinning in 1 direction.............inertia
in attempt to ' rocking ' out of a sump
energy was sent in the opposite direction resulting in a crashing of the differential

the diff did NOT in a split second have an opportunity to release & reengage
    resulting in ' fraggin '
    actually either ......or

Just read through this thread because I found it interesting. Your reply struck a nerve and here's why.

Last year my wife was involved in 2 separate crashes in our 2008 TRD Sport, which had 59,000 easy miles on it. It was actually her truck, because she wanted to commute in truck, so I bought it for her. It was a little weathered after 10 years of ownership (clear coat peeling etc), but it was as mechanically sound as they get.

After the 2nd crash, which resulted in the Sport being totaled by the insurance company, I went out and bought a 2018 TRD DCORSB 4x4 and she will never set foot in the drivers seat, unless she is taking me to the hospital or something like that.

Some women "like" to drive trucks, but some women are not up to the task. Mine demonstrated she .... well....lets just leave it at that....lol.

P.S. One accident, was deemed by the insurance company to be 100% the other persons fault. The 1st accident was deemed 50/50 so no points and no rate increase, but still... she is spooked about trucks now, and I am happy that she is spooked.....HA !

Trying not to mod but I may have no choice.
Its happened to me twice in my old vw. Wheel hop then boom axle out of the diff. Luckily it would only be the axle and not the diff. Diff went eventually too. It took alot tho for an old POS.
