The axle housing new alone is likely over a $1000

The center section new is likely around $1500

This is just the bare bones stuff assuming the axle splines aren't gooched. If those are boned add another couple of hundred on the fire, plus the labor to swap the backing plates, brakes, pound in new axle tube seals, bleed the brakes swap all the ABS wiring and sensors, brake cables etc.

People don't believe this but Toyota dealers really aren't interested in digging through Connor's stash of used Toyota parts to scare up a deal. The OP would be better off sourcing a rear end on car-part that was drum to drum

    Taking ownership...much respect.

Not the first time, nor last that I have seen a differential puking parts. Two years ago I seen a DynaTrac ProRock 60 crack and split the housing. It was awesome.
We got the bare housing in the jig, alignment bar in place, nickel rod out, went to town. This was the break in trail....

As others have said, there is no way in living hell I would pay the dealership 4500.00 to replace my rear axle. Junk yards ship, just saying.

Only thing I see savage at this point really is that giant extra hole in that axle.

I am not passing any judgment about abuse, manufacturing defects, or proper techniques, etc. Nor have I witnessed any differential grenading that wasn't due to high stress put upon it. But I want to present a separate scenario and let y'all debate if it could produce these same results we see in the photo.
Most of the comments state that the hole could only have been caused by a high speed projectile. But the tolerance between the ring gear and the case is very, very tight, almost nil! In fact, most rear case covers are shaped to just clear the ring gear.
So with that thought, could the hole have resulted from a loose bolt (or gear chunk) which got pinched between the gear & case - and thus forced through the case wall? (The fact that a bolt (or other part) was loose / free inside is another discussion and, granted, it may have been set free by too high of speed or abuse.) I just can't discount (w/ my limited knowledge of diffs) that there may be a reason for the hole other than the wife slamming the xmsn between gears.
    What do you think?

    See post #159.
