My 2011 fell apart internally after running in a small snow storm. I traded it in for a new one. I didn't do any forward reverse manuvers. Rears are kind of junk I'm thinking and the electric LSD with ABS I'm pretty sure will be enough to cannon ball one. If the one in this new truck blows I'm buying a Fiat.

Last time I saw a hole like that I had wait for the tire smoke to clear first. Nice brake stand then, BOOM!
    Thankfully, it wasn't mine.

Even though the 3rd Member is removable and replaceable as a separate unit it won't do him any good as he needs the entire rear assembly.

I think the wife may have "under reported" exactly how much throttle she was really giving it....

I'm assuming you have insurance on a truck that new. File a claim and pay the deductible. I screwed up a 2016 Camry that was totally my own fault. Bent the oil pan and oil pickup line. In the boonies of Arizona with no cell service so had no choice but drive to nearest town. I told the claims rep the truth and they replaced the engine without batting an eye and didn't raise my rate. (Geico)

Yup, a guy just burned his truck up by leaving a lit Butane torch on the passenger floorboard and walk away for 45 minutes.

The OP is a coworker and he didn't do his first post any justice as we've all been talking about this at work for a couple of days. First his wife was backing out of a level parking spot at work in about 6 inches of snow. It spun a little on ice and the truck jerked and stopped. She put it in drive to pull forward a few feet so she could give it a better try and the grenade happened. A coworker looked under it and saw the oil immediately. She did spin while backing up but wasn't hot dogging it like we all would, she works at a 6th grade camp where that stuff doesn't fly. His wife is used to driving on ice and snow and they routinely drive their Toyotas over 200,000 miles before replacement. A friend of mine who builds axles and diffs full time is going to look at the 3rd member when the OP can get it away from Toyota and suspects that something failed inside and jammed between the ring and pinion causing the diff to explode, duh but maybe he can see what failed first. The OP was just looking for advice on dealing with Toyota and to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Some of these responses are damn funny though, especially the "O face"!

How does that happen? Popping the clutch while revving too much? Too much power for the type of diff in it?

brake stand....holding the brake while revving the engine high, release the brake and launch

Not necessarily because of a weak diff, it just puts a ton of stress on it (and a lot of other things). I don't think manufacturers design parts around the craziest shit a few of their customers might try and do lol

    Too few to list.
Hmm... don't think you can go from forward to reverse while the wheels are spinning. The ECU won't allow for it. It will either beep and not go in gear or shut off the engine. Believe it or not, the engineers actually thought of this kind of scenarios.

That cant be done in a 3rd gen... the engine basically loses power and a big warning light comes up on the dash.
