Hey guys, first post so go easy :).

So I have a 09 TRD Sport, long box, double cab, as of tues I busted the diff, bad. Needs to be replaced.

Now Toyota is quoting me 2k+ with taxes for just a replacement. I would love to put a locking differential in her and figure this is probably the best time to do it. Now the gear ratio for my truck is 4.10.11.

Two questions mainly just to confirm what I have reseached

One: the TRD Off road diff is not just a plug and play. And takes a bit of work to do.

Two: the ARB Air lock is the only aftermark locker option avaliable to me at this point.

Would I be correct in these two statements? If not, please some solid advice would be nice as Im currently without a vehical and can't really afford much more than 2.5k and I have no shop nor the time available to do my own work so I would have to have a shop do it.

Why not consider a mechanical LSD of previous years, of course only if you're staying on the street and I assume so being that you have a Sport. I had an 06 with electric locker, I rarely used it and it eventually had a failed actuator. I'm not a fan of the electric LSD of my 2014 either. I had 175,000 on my '06 diff so buying one with a few miles would not be an issue.

I bought the sport because the off road didn't come in 4 doors with the long box if it had I would have bought the off-road. Its my DD, hunting truck and general work truck and East coast Canadian winters on occasion require a little extra. I do like what I have read recently, about the old mechanical LSD. Right now it may be my only option.

You'd be setup with a new diff with an ARB locker from ECGS for $500 less than Toyota quoted you for a stock replacement.

And no...the TRD e-locker diff is not plug in play in the 8.4 housing. It requires drilling, welding, and grinding (not to mention electrical).

As for the installation.....it's really stupid simple and requires no special tools.

Jack up the truck and put it on stands.
    Remove wheels.
    Drain diff fluid.
Remove the 4 nuts on each of the axle flanges and remove the brake lines from the drums and you can pull the axles out.
Remove the 4 bolts on the driveshaft pinion flange.
Remove 10 nuts from the pumpkin.
    Remove the entire third member.
Cleanoff the old gasket and apply new black RTV sealant.

    Installation is the reverse steps.
Bleed brakes and fill diff with fluid and you're done.

Depending on how much beer you drink...1-2 hours. Don't watch TV one day and you're set.

Not so much that I can't do it, its that theres about 2 feet of snow on the ground and about -16 C lol and right now I don't have the time or the place to do it myself. Trust me if I could I would save my self a lot of money by doing so.

What is the damage to your rear end, ring and pinion, carrier? Are your axles damaged? Is your housing cracked? If your damage is isolated to your 3rd member East Coast Gear may be your best bet.

If your posted in Gagetown , 4 Wheel Parts (once National 4WD) also an option, is located on Whiting road about 10 minute from Gagetown. They sell ARB lockers and ring and pinion.

If you still have stock gearing, you should have 3.73 gears with your 4L V6, only the 4Cyls got 4.10s from factory. If you're 4wd, you'll need to match the front, or re-gear both the same.

From what I can understand(as per toyota was being very vague) It sounds like its isolated to just the 3rd member. 4 wheel is more then likely gonna be the guys I go with, been on the phone with them all week about options. IF my diff gear ratio is what it should be and not the 4.10 toyota told me is associated with my vin then I may just purchase a old mechanical LSD iIsaw for sale. If it's not and I somehow got lucky with the 4.10 then I'm looking at the Detroit LSD. I got the locker priced and its considerably more then what toyota quoted me to just replace the old one. Still looking around but to get my truck back on the road asap I may not be able to get the setup I want at this time. Still looking though.

So got it sorted, it is 3.73 parts guy was using the wrong number and I found a full rear end with the old mech LSD for 650 so gonna be going with that. Still waiting on a quote from the shop for a quote but it looks good and much cheaper then the other way anf I end up wit a better rear end so woot!
