This is a defective Hino part and they just keep dumping them in the Trucks - it is NOT normal - after battles on my 2018 with dealer they finally replaced it after hearing noise at around 10K miles and it had excessive shavings - sold it at around 28k and noise had not returned and diff fluid stayed clean - checked and flushed it myself 5k after replace and magnetic drain plug clean.

No whining here. Remove the front spoiler and you will get some whining like wind noise at 45 mph and above.

Entire inner differential assembly (carrier assembly). They pull axels on rear and disconnect drive shat, unbolt and the whole thing slides out as single assembly.

Folks - it is bad heat treat on gears - they wear down until you have excessive lash which causes noise - its a known issue - drain your fluid and look at plug - it will be caked with black powder - mine was - replaced it with good part and it stayed clean and silent.

Just had my whole assembly replaced today. No whine on the way home. I’m going to be following the break-in procedure for new gears this time and switching to severe gear by Amsoil. Hopefully the whine doesn’t come back…

FWIW, I have the rear diff whine and recently replaced the gear oil with Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 and it made no difference whatsoever. I have approximately 15K miles on the truck.

When I removed the drain plug, the gear oil was darkening but not too bad. I have seen much worse. There was a fine black powdery substance on the magnetic drain plug, what I consider to be as expected and common from numerous others diffs I have drained and filled on different manufacturer's cars and trucks.

I’m hoping to catch it before it starts... There are a few on here that had good results that followed the break in process. It’s worth a shot, if anything I’ll know there’s good diff oil in the rear.

I do not disagree it is worth a try but, i find it somewhat funny that when it comes to oil changes and the brand and weight of motor oil, so many are adamant that it makes no difference. buy what's ever on sale - mobil, pennzoil, costco, Amazon, 0w-20, 5w-20, 10w-30, etc., dump in it, and go. you'll never see or experience a difference.

but, with diff oil, the brand does (or may?) make a difference. o_O

I agree. I’ve watched a few comparisons of gear oils and Amsoil does stand out along with shaeffers. They seem to hold up well in extreme conditions. I feel like motor oil is treated differently because it’s changed more frequently and you can get away with using a cheaper brand. And to be honest at the end of the day it’s just oil….I just signed up for the Amsoil preferred customer discount so I’ll probably end up using them for engine oil as well when I take over doing my own.

22 Access cab OR, currently just under 20K. May or may not be the same since what I had was a high-pitched rotational sort of noise most prevalent at 65-70. Had it checked out at the 15K service and they said they couldn't find anything and didn't hear any noise but found out they only took it up to about 45 or so on the road so figures why it was "good". This time I got a tech to ride with me, confirmed the sound and left at the dealer. Got a call the shop manager doubly confirmed the noise and they'll be replacing rear end. No hassle on anything. Will see what they say about possible causes when I pick it up.

Changed the oil in the rear diff on my 2022 Sport/manual trans yesterday. I have 6,700 miles logged. The plug with the magnet was filled with ferrous material,(black) and a 1/4” round metal cap thing, conical looking was attached as well!
So I wondering where this metal cap came from and for the miles there was sure a lot of metal in the cap and the oil was quite dark! I changed the transmission oil a week ago and it was surprisingly filled with metallic metal. Not ferrous, I would guess brass and aluminum. So the upshot here is I believe that it would be a very good idea to change out the fluids after the first 5,000 miles logged on a new Tacoma. By doing do one will clean out the break-in materials that are floating about which affect the bearings considerably. Any one have any ideas regarding the metal cap I found in my diff?

Pics would be nice. My guess is it’s a remnant of machining process
