It seems a lot of people like the GoPro. I'm waiting on them now for information on mounting in rear window some how so it will not be noticed. Around here if word got out there was a camera in your vehicle or they even thought so. They would break in and steal it, therefore it has to be concealed well!
So that would be the main problem, mounting it secure enough that they couldn't steal it!!

How long will yours run on a fully charged battery?

In 1080 (HD video) about 4 hours straight. You have to set to continuous video record in the cameras menu, if I remember correctly. They have several mounting options for the camera.

Gopros have a "continuous loop" mode that when selected will record video constantly. Once the SD card fills up, it starts overwriting itself. When the camera catches something you wanna save, you just stop it from recording and it'll be on your SD card when you plug into your computer. So if you just got a DC charger for it, it could film continuously and indefinitely.

I think a gopro is a little overkill for your situation though, they are pricey and more for action sports capturing where the ruggedness and image quality are important. Something far less expensive (and probably much smaller/ stealthier) could probably do whatever you need it to do. You don't need 11MP resolution to capture a license plate number or someone's face.

I think go pro runs too hot for this purpose.

I see what you are saying, above, however I need multiple recordings of a few minutes each, maybe 10 minutes at the very most would be "Great", but 5 to 6 minutes would be all I would probably need. That would call for the camera being shut off or on "Hold" some how till needed to record again.
The result would be "multiple results" on a SD of flash drive card that I could then put on a computer and use as needed.

I've spent most of today researching the gopro and I am inclined to agree at this point with what you have basically said. It's to big and hard to conceal (awesome though).

I do need to capture the license plate number/vehicle and hopefully the faces of the occupants individuals up to 30 feet or so but most of he time it would be about 8 to 15 feet measured from the back window of my Tacoma Extended Cab, not kidding !

MowTaco you seem to understand cameras pretty well. If you have any suggestions or thoughts no matter how small please don't hesitate to post them here.

    Thank you very much.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
You need to contact a security company. You seem to have very specific needs that you are not going to find at your local electronics store.

Do you care to share yet what exactly is happening. I assume you need this evidence because you have gone to the authorities? Is it out of the question to plant a camera on your home to catch what you need?

Would having a friend ride with you be out of the question? I would think that most cell phone cameras would capture the "evidence" well enough to hold up in court. Seems like the cheapest option to me.

You're killin' us man, just say what you want to film! Haha so suspenseful. I don't know shit about cameras really, I just went through the researching process of action cameras recently so all my learning is fresh in my mind. I decided on a GoPro hero 3 and bought one used off craigslist for 200 bucks. Maybe you should consider a backup camera, it seems like it'd capture everything you want to capture.

Seriously, if this is paramount to your family's safety and you don't feel comfortable giving any information about what you need to record I think you are barking up the wrong tree. Call a security professional and get a real solution.

Good luck bro. You really need to talk with someone that does security professionally.

I don't think 'backup' cameras record, just stream to a screen.

what about a contour brand camera? i beleive they have one now that you can view the images and control through your iphone... they look a lot smaller/easier to conceal and mount...i have never used a POV camera but may end up getting a contour eventaully

I'm telling you, the gopro is is smallest, quality, best resolution camera for the money. It'll take 1920x1080 video at 60 frames a second. In one second of video you'll have 60 still frames in basically a 2MP camera with a better ccd lense found on the 2MP cameras back in the day.

As long as you can be sneaky enough to hide it's visibility(and happen not to try to film at night), you have anyone fucking with you(that's been caught on it) not have a whole of a lot of ability to talk their way out of it.

I won't argue that the gopro is an amazing camera, I myself have more than one. However, a gopro is the worst option for what OP the is looking for.

GoPro lenses are designed for very close action shots. Unless the car is 2-3 feet behind his back WINDOW, it won't capture any of the detail that he needs at the distance that he is describing.
