    hey. i did a search but i couldnt find anything. does anyone know what it would take to put disc brakes in the rear of my '06? any other toyota models that would just "bolt on"??? i would love to get 4 wheel disc brakes but not wanting to get knee deep in it or spend a butt load of cash on it. thanks :pray:

    They make a rear disc conversion for the X-Runner (5 lug), I'm not sure about the 6-lugs. I thought there was one for the FJ, might look into that and see if it is interchangeable.

    1st. the link only brings up the page that I got to come up, not much help.

    2nd. I like the idea of 4 wheel discs over the drum. IMO has better stopping power.

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    There have been some people that did the rear disk conversion, only to find their brakeing performance suffer. Drums have more brake surface area, but they fade quicker.

    I say leave the factory brakes, drums were put on for a reason and they work.

    For exactly the reason that chris mentioned:
    People have done it and found their stopping power suffered overall. The truck payload capacity and set up is based on the drum set up. Sports cars with 4 corner discs are set up to work best that way...but it's your truck. Good luck!!

    meanwhile... back on topic :)

    Disk brakes have one other advantage that they self clean much better than drums. For example, if you go mudding, the mud can compact in drums ruining the shoe, not so with disk.

    Toy most likely put on drums because they`re cheaper, but I suspect that without weight in the bed, you`d have too much braking power with disks.

    If you always have weight in the back or go mudding, disks would be good, otherwise drums will not hurt.

    Our trucks use the drums for the emergency/parking brake too... switching to discs might make the e-brake situation complicated.

    Drum brakes have a higher holding capacity than disc, which actually is quite nice for the e-brake especially when you have a heavy trailer hooked up.

    Here is my question... are there any after market pads for drum brakes and if so, what about for our trucks?

    Do some research on brakes and how they work. You can't just slap disc brakes on and call it good. Master Cylinders are different for disc/drum vs disc/disc systems and so is the proportioning and valving.

    If you change to discs in the rear, you should change out the master cylinder and the proportioning.

    And that doesn't even include the ABS system which is all tied into it and could also need changed.
