Its got a crappy spacer lift for now. PO put it on there. I wouldn't have wasted my money and would have gone straight for a quality suspension upgrade.

Funny... I much rather prefer the brake feel on my 17 taco than the 19 T4R. MUCH prefer.
And the taco has heavier bigger tires as well.

Let's be honest, some are just looking for a reason to hate drum brakes.

I am not, mine work great

 I'm curious where this leads. My TRD OR has the grabby feel sometimes, I contribute it mostly to crappy brake bumps slowing down for traffic lights. Its not bad enough that I have felt a need to do anything about it, but I will be replacing my pads shortly, I'm still on the original pads with 50k miles. My commute doesn't have many intersections and there isn't much traffic on back shifts. Any who, we skewped up a TRD Pro 4runner and now I feel like my truck rides like crap and the brakes kind of bother me a little more than they used to. :anonymous:

I don't have a problem with them, I don't think that's what causes the grabby feeling cause when the truck is loaded I have never felt it, and if it was the drums I would think it would be worse when they are being worked more.

I think the drum brake thing is bizarre for some people in 2020, like how most new cars don't have cd players. Personally, I wouldn't buy a car/truck without a cd player. Or how about wired headphones...

The guys at work bring up the drum brake thing and I'm like your Ram got 22k miles on it and the factory exhaust has fallen off twice and your tailgate randomly opens?

They used them because they were cheaper. That's it. If they were better they would be on the Tundra, 4runner, Land Cruiser, etc, along with other truck manufacturers. But Wranglers are disc, new Ranger, Colorado, and Frontier are all disc. Full size trucks are all disc including 1 tons.

The Toyota Yaris also has rear drums for high performance and efficiency.

Tacoma and Yaris. Two peas in a pod.

Yeah but who cares if they did it because they're cheaper. What matters is 'would people even utilize the advantages of disc brakes on the Taco?' Given that most of the braking force occurs on the front discs, the answer would be no.

If this were a track car then I'd say yeah, discs all around. But the reality is, the truck stops perfectly fine the way it is. If Toyota put discs on, they would just pass the extra cost onto buyers, and make even more profit, all while 99.9% of owners wouldn't benefit from the advantages.

I'm not sure thats a fair comparison since disc brakes handle heat significantly better. In fact thats kind of the main reason is heat which is why the front brakes are disc. Large trucks today still use drum brakes and have greater stopping power in those situations but do burn up under heat loads.

My F-250 had rear drum brakes and guess what happened when I slammed the brakes, my rear tires dragged, literally dragged. There just isnt enough load to require discs and frankly our Tacomas arent towing anything significant to need the heat dissipation of a rotor.

You dont join forums without passion. Kinda ironic for a guy whose biggest complaint is the brakes. LOL

It was a very tongue in cheek comment. What I really felt like saying was, Give it a rest guys!!

There's a lot of people on this forum who are trying to answer questions that aren't being asked. And lots of people weighing in on a debate about disc vs drum. All that belongs in another thread

    More tech, less talk

Yeah, that spacer lift is creating axle wrap when you brake. Get that shit of stat and throw a few sand bags in the bed and you'll be as happy as a grumpy clam.
