I think the term you are looking for is "mental obsessive disorder 3rd gen." Known as MOD-3. No known cure, but injecting your brain with bleach might help.

What do 99.9999% of Semi tractor trailers run full loaded on long haul?

    Drums

Drum brakes work great. I have a 17’ trailer I tow with electric drum brakes. If I crank up the brake controller they do all the braking for the fully loaded truck AND trailer with almost NO help from the truck itself.

    With air brakes.

Wait a second, WITAF don't we have air brakes on Tacomas! Fuck you, Mike Swears! You're trying to kill us all!

My brakes are super grabby as well. I also have a 2019 TRD OR.

Someone said it earlier but my biggest complaint is how much the soft OR suspension dives when it brakes. I have a feeling it would feel a lot better with a better suspension set up.

Again, they’re cheap. Much lower running costs than discs. It’s not about stopping power.

The brakes on these trucks are just fine plus I'm at 81k miles on the factory brakes so they are durable as well.

Well, it was supposed to say comment, but missed it by that much.
You say efficient, disks dissipate heat better, weigh way less, provide more stopping power. Almost all race cars have rear disks for all the above reason.
Does that mean the Tacoma needs them? No, but to say drums are more efficient then disks is wrong.

Performance of air brakes are not superior to hydraulic breaks, so this is not something to consider. But it is more reliable.

Discs are better when towing. Discs are a lot better when upgrading to larger tires. Drums are a pain in the ass compared to discs to change. They are harder to clean after you have been in the mud and get the drum full. If you have an axle leak, you lose the breaking power, not just parking break. It is harder to check for remaining pad/shoe. They also just don't look as good. Why should we be ok with it because drums work? The powertrain works too, but it needs an upgrade. Upgrade the damn truck to meet the current standard. It would be a lot cheaper to do it factory than to do a conversion now. It is a shortcoming of the Tacoma. These trucks are good and that's why I bought it, but that doesn't mean they are perfect.

If 3rd Gen break performance is your biggest complaint then count yourself as fortunate.

This truck needs rear discs as much as it needs a carbon fiber wing on it

Drums are only still on semis because it's too expensive to switch over to disc. A truck with disc couldn't use a drum trailer and vice versa so it becomes a logistical nightmare. Theres no questions drums are simply a cost saving measure.

To OPs question I think it may have something to do with the different brake booster used on the OR/PRO. Notice most of the people with similar issues are OR or PRO owners. I don't think its the actual brakes themselves.

Might as well have carbon fiber body also since we are comparing to F1 cars.

    You're right on all points.

Simple answer: cost. Why pay more for something I don't need? Am I constantly running into situations where rear drum fade is causing me to miss the stop sign or even have to push the pedal harder? Nope. Rear drums also last longer than rear discs, so there are some advantages.

Are you running into situations where rear drum fade is a constant issue?

What did you upgrade too? I was towing my travel trailer over the Continental divide last summer and had the scare of my life as my brakes basically faded to nothing and I had to dial up my trailer brakes to save my ass. Was gonna upgrade next month and was gonna start Researching rotors/pads.

They seem to stop just fine. Ever see a fully loaded semi make a panic stop and lock up both drive axles with 8 tires, leaving a massive rubber streak?

The point I was trying to make is that comparing a Tacoma to an F1 car is like comparing a Tacoma to a semi. It’s silly. They all have different jobs to do.
