Quick Question, One of my rear drive shaft u-joints went out about 3 weeks ago, had it towed to the dealership who couldn't order parts for a drive shaft and wanted $1350 to put a new one in... I found a place who rebuilds driveshaft's and have been pulling parts off my truck at night and taking them to the place who rebuilds them. Now I have a new Driveshaft ($230) :)

So it occurred to me that I should be able to put my truck in FWD and have a front wheel drive truck.... I have about 40 miles to go to get it home... The whole rear drive shaft is in the backseat of my car... I would rather do this than work on it in Toyotas lot at night...

Has anyone done this, opinions?? 06 Taco TRD Access Cab 120K

I have done it before myself and seen it done. Drive slow and take it easy. The truck will handle differently.

My friend blew up his rear drive shaft on a trail. Put it in "FWD" and drove out the 8 miles on the trail then 30 or so miles home no problem.

Thanks, yeah I didn't think that it would handle differently as a Front Wheel Drive Truck!

I was wondering if anyone has advice on 05 and newer (Sorry in wrong Forum, Only my 2nd post) Tacos, I don't know what kind of fail safe or electronic controls the newer trucks may have in them that would prevent me from doing this.

Ahh that may make a difference. I would think you would still be fine but not 100% on 2nd gens.
