Hey folks! My rear drum brakes look really rusty. I know that’s what they do, but I feel mine are excessive. Curious if you all could post some photos of yours for comparison. Here’s mine, off of my 2015.

    All stock, baby!
Like you said, that’s just what they do. Mine look like they’ve been at the bottom of the ocean for a while. You can clean up the rust, prep, then paint with high-temp paint, but it’s just for looks. The rust won’t typically damage the drums before they’re worn out, unless you really don’t put many miles on the vehicle.

Mine aren't as bad, but I don't drive much, and when I do it's just on paved roads.

You can always take them off, degrease, dry, and hit with satin black spray paint to get a factory looking finish.

Wondering if you cleaned them up and painted them would that help?

I've seen a youtube where a wire brush and brake degreaser was used. It seemed to help some for a lot of effort. It wasn't perfect.

I did the wire brush method. I occasionally do touch ups now and then.0129221221.jpg

The drums of my 2021 in AZ looked like this after 2500 miles (same brakes). It's just what they do, the stock coating on them cannot handle any heat whatsoever.

You can pop the drums off pretty easily and then get a look at the shoes and inside of the drum to check for wear. with you being a 15 it might be time for a replacement depending on mileage, but if they're good then it's easy to just paint them up. Good time to clean out all the brake dust out of the drum too.

Paint process: Remove drums from truck. Wire brush or wire wheel off as much of the coating you can get to come off. Spray liberal amounts of brake clean on the drums then isopropyl a few times until they're clean. Then prime, paint and clear (all with high heat paint) and they'll look much better then new.

(I did these while my shocks were @ ADS getting revalved)

Yeah pop em off, brush the rust off half decently and spray down with some engine high heat spray paint. I did mine awhile ago and need to do some touch up the next time the wheels are off if i remember to.

I heard if you paint the drums in bright neon pink, you get an extra 20HP at the wheels. ;)

Actually, any neon color does that!

Only at the rear wheels though. Gotta paint the front calipers to get 20 hp to all 4 wheels
