I have a 2020 Tacoma that I had to have the rear drums replaced in July of 2021. I recently had to have them replaced yet again. A week into the new drums the truck is shuddering like crazy again!!! Any thoughts? It’s out of pocket now so I don’t want to put a third set of drums on if there’s a known issue causing this. Anyone? Thanks!

i think the axle shaft or flange was bent in my truck. spent thousands and months trying to fix it before selling it. no one could figure out the issue.

something else is wrong, drums should go 100k, and often times many many more.
Sounds like improper diagnoses and/or repair.

That’s a shame. How does this happen? Can’t believe it was a manufacturing issue. Did you buy the truck new? Maybe it was hit in the rear?

I’m at 55k miles and still haven’t even opened them up.

Brakes are very smooth though! :)

This doesn’t sound right at all. Usually the front discs get warped and cause a brake shudder but not so much drums. And you shouldn’t go through a new set in a week. Not sure what you have going on but take it somewhere else reputable.

Is it doing it on deceleration between 30-10mph? If so there is a tsb out to replace the rear leaf springs and add a steering damper behind the air bag.

Check into this a little deeper . There is something not right . Go to a different dealer or a good mechanic . This is not normal . The drum brakes are very reliable, don’t listen to some of the complaints here about them . The only issue I’ve ever had with drum brakes is one time I washed the truck and the temp dropped like 50 degrees in a few hours , and by mistake I put the emergency brake on . The next morning when I released the brake the wheels were frozen , but I was able to free it up pretty quickly .

Thanks for the feedback. Front brakes have been checked. Truck shudders when braking. Especially if coming down a hill. There is a bit of a vibration coming from the rear of the truck while driving this time.

if you can duplicate the shudder, maybe slide the transmission in to neutral (if it's safe) and see if you can isolate?

I’ll try that Chewy. I especially feel it going downhill.

Remove the rear wheels (safely) put on jackstands.
put suitable device (a dial indicator would be best) at bottom of the axle flange. With front wheels chocked put in trans in "N" Have someone rotate the other wheel while you look for any runout of the axle flange. If no runout is noted then you have eliminated one source.
Put trans back into park or gear
