You could, but it would take some electrical engineering. Ive read that it's pulse wave modulated. Even so it still would take the 10 feet half circle to engage it. I don't know for sure but the pre 2016 have an external motor for locker, that seems like it could be manipulated with a hot wire.

Sorry about the semi-threadjack, but I put up a new thread in the 2nd gen forum a while back and didn't get any response. Looks like the crowd here is the knowledgeable portion of tw about what I'm dealing with.

I've got a 2010 TRD OR PreRunnner that's been having some minor diff issues lately and I'm looking at a couple options for dealing with it.

The main issue is some wear in my ring/pinion set (rear end howling under power above 40mph), so.I know I need to at least get those gears swapped out one way or another. The other problem I'm seeing is the e-lock engaging on its own most times I get over 65-70 mph (not a problem with freway-level curves, but I often need to turn the engine off and back on at the end of ramps).

I'm considering switching to an air-locker and just replacing the whole diff, but wonder if it might be easier/cheaper to just replace with a new e-locker or get the problem diagnosed by a shop while having the ring/pinion replacement done.

I've got a 4WD trail rig now, and the PreRunner is pretty much just my daily/commuter and lumber/tool hauler for weekend projects now, so I don't wheel the tacoma and don't necessarily even need the locker at all and would maybe consider getting a real LSD swapped in instead as well then just use the diff lock switch spot for an accessory of some kind.
