Rear e-locker

    Put it in, wheel the piss out of it, and be happy with a locker :D You won't be worried about breakage until years down the road after the truck is dual locked with a crawler and a solid axle on 37's.

    The backlash changing dynamically will happen - but less in the 8.4 The truss connecting the bearing caps is the biggest booster of strength in the 8.4. Other things that could influence the strength would be the thickness of the walls of the tubes (no idea if they are different), the 8.4 have larger studs (could make a very, very small difference with respect to the strength of the entire axle), the pumpkin is drawn deeper and that could have more strength (If it helps my cred, I own a deep draw metal stamping house ;) ). My housing flexed so much my backing plates were tweaked about 1/8" on both sides. My recklessness has not changed and my 8.4 has now surpassed the cumulative live of the 3 failed R&P.

    I feel very confident in the set up of my e-loocker thirds (one from Toyota and two from ECGS). The wear patterns of all three failed thirds looked like textbook examples as to how the wear pattern should look.

    And once again, my experience was based on a 2nd gen - with 20" of potential additional leverage on the rear. Now those guys that go through e-lockers on FJC's, they probably have the same wheelbase as the 1st gen guys.

    Time will tell.

    Bottomline is that your experience will probably be as unique as all of the varied experiences expressed in this thread.
