So you want to install numerically higher gears? If so, that would be a lower gear ratio.

You will need to change gears in both front and rear differentials. Had this done in my LJ Rubicon last year for $2,700 parts/labor.

Yes, you can go from your stock 3.91s to 4.30, 4.88, or 5.29. Very common with Tacoma owners.

By the way, as stated above, you’re looking for either a lower ratio or a numerically higher ratio. Lower ratios are a larger number.

From your title no, you can't just change the rear, being it is 4wd. You must change both, front and rear. Ski

My question is can I go from stock to higher (less drag) gear ratio. Lower numeric. Sorry I was unclear

So you want to go from 3.90 to something like 3.73? If so, no, an OR can’t do that with its rear diff and you wouldn’t want that anyways.

Not sure what drag has to do with any of the choices.

I say drag. I mean when you let off the gas it seems to be pulling backwards. It slows down quickly. My goal is more power, get up and go. I went from a 6.2L gas to this 6cyl. I knew there would be horsepower loss. I was just thinking outloud ways to achieve some things. Power, suspension and a smoother ride. I do not off road, or tow heavy things. I like the looks of Tacoma’s. Had a ‘09, ‘15 and a ‘17. Then Yukon Denali 7 years. Now back to Tacoma.

I haven’t driven the auto so I’m not certain but I believe they have some logic to downshift or at least lock the torque converter when you’re coasting so that it engine brakes a bit and doesn’t just coast as if it’s in neutral freewheeling. I don’t know how strongly it does this though.

Getting a gear ratio that provides more get up and go when you’re on the gas will slow you down more when you let off the gas. So unfortunately you have to decide if you want more torque in acceleration but with more slowdown when coasting, or leave it alone as is.

I'd adjust your expectations and not your gear ratios,,, or anything else, or trade it in on a big boat again.

Lowering the gear ratio will reduce your top speed. It's usually not recommended unless you are changing tire size. I agree with Chew, you need to adjust your expectations.

Based on what you're describing I'd go with a set of 4.88 gears.
Tons of people run them with stock tires (including me). Truck turns 2100 rpms at 70 on the interstate in 6th gear. No more crazy downshifting to maintain speeds. Truck is almost zippy around town. Every 2016+ Tacoma needs a regear regardless of tire size or added weight.

    Just my 2 cents...

Torque converter enters the slipping mode once you release the accelerator. During the coasting, ts is unlocked.
OP should try 2016-2018 SR5 and Sport with 3.73 diffs.

Your problem is you came from a 6.2L. Truthfully, ignore the other comments and just suck it up and get used to it or get another vehicle. Sorry for being crude. You need torque behind numerically lower gear ratios hence everyone is getting numerically higher gear ratios. You’re not going to change the Tacoma and make it drive like a 6.2L with some gears.

    so, engine braking

doing one mod, worsening gear ratio, if even possible, will not accomplish that
