I really appreciate your input on this

when you say 'carrier bearing' I suspect you are referring to the driveshaft center support bearing (donut)...is that correct?

it sounds like you are going through the same trouble shooting as me
I replaced both front & rear wheel bearing but the howl persists....that's when I started to look at the drive train
isolated the issue by doing the remove rear DS, 4HI, & test
furthermore, I scoped the diff before reinstalling DS & heard rumbling at where the pinion bearings are located
(truck's rear axle was elevated off ground & rear wheel turned by 2nd set of hands,
while I was under truck listening with scope at various points of the rear axle/diff housing)

Ah, yes thats correct. Center bearing. I plan on dropping the DS this week and testing.

keep the thread posted...very interested in the test results :)

btw- it is a truly unique experience running the taco in FWD mode...the torque steer is wild....you can really feel the power of the motor through the steering...crazy, weird, fun

Well, removed the driveshaft last night. Drove it into work in FWD, forgot how wild it actually is!

NO CHANGE. I still have a noise from 60-75ish MPH during accel, coast, and decel. It's the worst at 62.5 Also a nice decel noise between ~30-40, which I guess isn't the needle bearing since I was in fwd.

Next steps are to have the tires rotated and balanced, see if there's any change there.
    Maybe I got a bad hub bearing?:annoyed:

Lucky you, it’s probably the hub bearing or tires

    @Chiloquin_Car_Care

I’ve got the exact same howl in my diff in my 2012 at... get this... 58,000 miles. Really sucks that the powertrain warranty only lasts 5 years or else I’d be at the dealer right now. Can’t wait to see if your new third member fixes it, because this howl is so flippin annoying and I just wanna get rid of it.

EDIT: I just scored a used rear diff off a 2014 with only 12k miles on it. I'll install it next week and see how it goes

@Cozza your symptoms sounds very similar to mine.

I've had this noise for a while and tires didn't fix it. 2 new wheel bearings, CVs and the ECGS bushing. And it's still there. Took the rear driveshaft out and it's still there. Changed oil in both diffs and TC.... Still there. Tranny filter and refill... You guessed it, still there. Dropped the rear drive shaft as well...
I'm thinking pull the from driveshaft, drain the front diff and pull the CVs out. Them put rags in the holes and take it for a spin.

I have a recently rebuilt CV due to a torn boot and an original CV. I had the same thought about the front driveshaft too - maybe a u joint in that is bad

I only get the howl on decel or very light throttle on flat road (around 50-70mph, most audible at exactly 60mph)
I dont get the howl on normal accel/hard accel at 50-70mph

I think this a major factor in our similar, yet different issue

good luck on isolating your issue
    :)

Ive been playing around in FWD and noticed a vibration when giving it hard throttle... leads me to believe it may be something in the front driveshaft

I would try testing the ujoints in the front shaft
put in 4hi & shift between D & R (keep foot on brake while doing so) the truck should not jerk
maybe try this with rear shaft removed so all torque goes to front shaft & you can really feel any clunk while going back & forth from D TO R

Don't do this. The outer CV joint holds the wheel bearings together. With it removed, there is the possibility of the wheel bearing coming apart.

@Muddinfun thanks. I haven't done it yet. Guess I'll just pull the front ds off.

My 09 started howling at 75000. Still howling at 125000. I'm guessing it will be drivable for many more miles, but if your carrier swap works, I may have to follow suit for peace of mind and silence.

    thanks for your input
I noticed mine howling at 295k miles,
but I dont know how long it had been howling prior to that...could have been there for 100,000 miles, lol
& I just didnt notice because the howl is so subtle
I got tuned into the noise because of a different bearing issue at 295k (front diff needle bearing)
once I swapped the needle bearing for the ECGS bushing, I started paying attention to sounds from under the taco & discovered the 'HOWL'

cant wait to get my ECGS rear diff! (maybe monday????? go UPS go!)

My 2nd gen was howling @ about 140,00, pretty easy diagnosis when I jacked it up and spun the wheels the left front had a nasty rumble. New hub / bearing made it go away.

Im unsure if you read the whole thread, but I changed all 4 wheels bearing & the howl persists....I have isolated down to the rear diff pinion bearings or the race they run in as the cause of my howling....monday I get a rebuilt 3rd member from ECGS & cant wait to install it
