Just did this in my tacoma, put the 3.73 gears from East Coast Gear supply in my truck its an 8.4 Rear. You can get whatever gears you want from them and they build a great product. really easy to put in and only took my dad and I 2-3 hours without a lift. Also great customer service. They have ones for lockers too.

yea the 4.10's are to make up for the less power of the 4 cycle engine.

Why didn't Toyota offer a locker with the 4 cyl Ex. cab TRD? Why didnt they offer a 5 speed in a Prerunner? Why couldn't you get a V6 or the TRD package in a reg cab? Lots of things Toyota did doesn't make sense

Nope again. The ring is different on the number of bolts holding it to the carrier but the same otherwise. Shit's been beat to death and nobody gets it. The E-locker carrier is weak and the 8.4 benefits from girdles primarily.

Since you won't believe my word..Brian knows his stuff

I don't believe your word because I got chance to hold both rings in my hands and thickness Is not the same. You posted link to post from 2004. How does that apply to 3.73 gears sold in 2005?
Don't believe ? go on junkyard get both check yourself. Put two 3.73 rings on the table side by side and look. Standard one is thicker.
Thats why Trd is splitting for people. It splits over where bolts are. If it was only about girdles like you wrote it would destroy theeths not split.

No it's not. It's actually pretty simple to blow up one of those rear diffs. they're not that strong.

I don't think Toyota had much choice here. There are only two elockers in Toyota fleet. 8 inch and 9.5 inch used on heavy duty trucks, army and farm equipment. thanks to new standards elocker is going away in cars so there was no point of redesigning it.

The T100/Tacoma/Tundra 8.4" diff has been largely unchanged since 1993 when the T100 came out. Yukon sells one gearset for all Tacoma's 1995-2013 so I would call information from 2004 still pertinent....

They're pretty darn strong. I've seen 8.4s romped pretty hard

    I meant ring and pinion.
Agree on swapping whole third possibility, since it had been done before.
I think for smaller truck elocker worked fine especially id somebody is running 4.10s or 4.56s They should be fine. Its 3.73 that is to thin and its a problem.

Not sure what your point, there were no 3.73 gears back in 2004 when that post was made. He also mentions no thickness. Thickness was not something anybody had looked before.
Elocker fits in pretty much the same housing just have extra notch for the arm. So space for locking mechanism had to come from somewhere.

Agree, if they can handle supercharged trucks on 35's with stock gears, they can not be that bad.
