As far as the strain on a part, the universal joints and the cv joints would be the first that I would think to go. I've got shims on my rear end. I'd say my truck is set up exactly like toytec would call for the ultimate lift kit to be installed on our trucks.

Glad they fixed the truck. My 2010 is out of warranty plus I bought it used so repairs are done by me mostly. My truck has 50k miles with about 2.5" of rear lift and besides the typical low speed shudder plague it has been good. Again glad they fixed it for you. Toyota stood behind you not the stealership, not a surprise.

I'll be honest, it could have been a lot worse but on hour long call to customer care and the next day the were singing to a different tune. But I'm very glad they fixed it and I'm glad to have my truck back.

So I was taking a look around my truck earlier and noticed that one of my rear socks looks busted and leaking. This is the second one. So it has made my mind up for me, I'm going with icons and I'm going to go ahead and install a set of their bump stops also.

If you have shims than there is possibility your pinion is now upwards. That means with out extra gear oil you have possibility of running those pinion bearings dry and sheering off pinion inside. It happens more often than people think. Oil level on the rear has to be high enough to lubricate those bearings, since Toyota uses baffle to hold oil there, there will be no splash in there.
Who changed gear oil last time? I bet they did not fill it to correct level adjusted for your lift.

I'll admit that it's been a long time since I was in the service business. Nor was it a Toyota dealership.

I do have shims on my rear axle and Toyota has done all the maintenance on my truck.

That is what he is talking about with the shims installed the Pinion Shaft may be pointing upwards and not getting the proper lubrication. You may need to increase the standard oil level to compensate for the angle.

If the dealer says the lift broke it you are screwed.

Chances are than Toyota service guy did not put correct oil level in your truck. That also means there is possibility that your new differential is under filled too. So unless you want to replace another Diff you probably need to add gear oil to it. Or atleast check level. Dealers are notorious on under filling things. So lift may not be what destroyed the axle, but it was contributing factor, along side with improper gear oil change procedure.

    x2
I would think by now anybody who has a lift and shims knows, to make sure that gear oil level is correct.
Even those with out a lift needs to pay attention to that, since leaf springs wear out and may change how an axle is positioned.
