If I we’re going to change out my rear end how would I know which one is in my truck to get the same one? I have a 2012 Tacoma 4x4 automatic.

Says my diff is an open diff. If gear ratios and everything else we the same could you put a diff with limited slip in without having to change anything else out?

Let me help you out. There are only 4 rear axles used in the 2nd gen Tacos.

All 4 cyl Tacos got 4.10 open diffs

‘05-‘08ish TRD sport Tacos got 3.73 with limited slip

All TRD off road Tacos got 3.73 with an E locker

All other V6 Tacos got 3.73 open diffs.

Some Tacos were special ordered with a limited slip diff option, but that’s probably pretty rare.

Edit: This info only pertains to 6 lug Tacos.

Pretty sure the 12’ models had a Brake Actuated Limited Slip.
Don’t know how that would work having 2 “different” system at once?

    @whatstcp might know? @EatSleepTacos

I’d just drop in an open diff and let the truck work it out.

    There are 2 different types.

Mechanical LSD - uses clutch packs
Electronically Controlled LSD - use the brakes

Yes, in your case Limited Slip has nothing to do with the Differential.
It has everything to do with the BRAKES.

In the Pre-09’ trucks you used clutch packs INSIDE the differential.
In the 09+ trucks the they used the brakes on the OUTSIDE of the differential to “Limit Slip”

Why replace clutch packs when brakes are easier and cheaper?

    How it works

You have an open diff. Put an open diff in there if you’re trying to replace it. It’s as simple as that.

I get that. It’s still confusing it saying I have automatic limited slip. I can’t find a diff for this truck that says it’s open. All that I’ve found that’s 3:73 says limited slip

Any 3.73 diff from 09-15 that doesn’t have an e locker is an open diff. Where are you looking for parts?

Yes, you can do that. If I were you and had the chance, I would. Mechanical LSD is far superior to electronic traction nannies from Toyota. And having both systems will not be an issue at all. This ain’t like wearing two condoms. If the mechanical LSD does its job there simply won’t be any slip detected by the traction nanny
