Sorry to bother you but you seem pretty knowledgeable

I have a 3.73 open diff. How hard would it be to install an e-locker from a TRD OR? Or should I just forego the hassle and get an air locker?

The axle housings are different. I think you’d be better off with an aftermarket locker like an ARB but you could go junkyarding and swap in the whole elocker rear axle from a TRD off-road

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. The air locker can be installed in your housing using your gears. For the elocker, you must replace the whole complete rear end out of a TRD OR. For the air locker you have the added expense and labor of installing a compressor, tank, valves, and plumbing. For the elocker, I think someone makes a harness and switch to make it work. Some hard core wheelers have broke the ring and pinion in a TRD OR elocker axle because it doesn’t have the carrier bearing girdle that the open diff has.

So, there you have it. Strongest, most complex, most expensive- air locker. Easiest, cheaper option- complete TRD OR rear axle out of a wrecking yard. Another good option would be to have a Detroit Trutrac installed in your rear axle.

I bought a TRD OR specifically for the elocker. When I bought my Taco, I was very specific in what I bought, right down to the color and price. Mine doesn’t see tires bound up, axle snapping kind of use. It’s 90% daily driver, parts hauler, grocery getter, and 10% slippery mud travel as a support truck for my serious balls out mud truck.
