Hello all. This is my first post to this site, although I have been reading it for a while. That said, I am looking for your recommendations and thoughts on a couple of items.

To begin with, I got rear ended by someone while driving to work last week. Needless to say I am pretty upset about this, especially since I keep my truck in immaculate condition and had just reached 15,000 miles the day before (so the truck is basically still new). Fortunately, the truck is still drivable while I am waiting for it to be repaired.

As you can see in the pictures, the plastic bumper did not hold up too well and mostly shattered upon impact. As it broke apart, my left rear quarter panel crumpled as it was pushed forward. It now looks like the quarter panel will need to be replaced along with the rear bumper. The bumper has BSM sensors that were also damaged during the collision.

My first question is how easy do you think it will be for this to be repaired? There are a lot of little plastic parts that are broken or missing and some of the metal is bent. As far as I can tell, the frame appears to be OK, but I'll leave it to the body shop to make a determination on that.

Besides what is shown in the pictures, what other things should I look for that may have been damaged?

My second question is I am considering replacing the factory bumper was something more durable since I was less than impressed with the way it held up. Granted, it was not built to withstand a rear end collision; however, I believe that a steel bumper would have prevented the damage to the quarter panel. Consequently, what brand of steel bumper do you prefer? What do you think of the Fab Fours bumper? What other bumper recommendations do you have for a reasonable price? One caveat is that the rear bumper needs to accept the BSM sensors.

If I replace the rear bumper, I will probably eventually replace the front bumper with something that matches. I don't want to spend a fortune on this, but want something that is functional, looks good, won't rust, and will not require (much - if any) metal to be cut away during installation.

I look forward to your input and future participation on this site. Thanks.

Step 1: get insurance quote to fix back to factory (Judging by the quaterpanel damage, not gonna be cheap)
Step 2: take said money, and get Rear high clearance bumper(this is a perfect candidate since all the damage is below the tail light level)
Step 3: you will have $$ left over, so get a matching front bumper.
    Step 4: Profit

What brand high clearance bumper do you recommend? Do the sensors work with the bumper?

Not sure on sensors someone else can chip in here. Pretty sure i remember someone incorporating these. Where are you located? Shipping can be expensive, so often people choose a bumper/skid/slider shop in their region.

Check the cab corner at the front of the bed. The bed may have moved and hit the cab corner, pretty comon on rear end accidents.

Dude I would call this the perfect rear end I've been waiting for! Get multiple insurance quotes and verify frame is straight take the money and get a high clearance bumper and pocket the rest or matching front bumper.

Good excuse to get a nice free aftermarket bumper!

Quick question... Did a woman hit you??

I got rear ended before i hit 1000 miles in my new truck... Before i made the first payment... A lady not paying attention... But the damage was way less severe...

I got $600 from insurance... and bought new tires lol

My first third gen was totaled... another lady not paying attention... Also, Before i made the first payment...

    Women...

Years ago I was the front vehicle in a 5 car pile up in my Hilux. I went through the intersection on a green traveling around 40 MPH.A bus had stopped right after the intersection so I had to slam on the brakes.

The old iron bumper on the Hilux took the impact of a 5 car pile up. No body or taillight damage. I never fixed the bent down bumper and drove the truck another 13 years.

I prefer a solid metal bumper attached to the frame.

Sorry to hear that! I was rear ended 3 days after getting my third gen taco (150 miles on odometer) so I feel your pain. Mine had less damage, and I was able to use ins quote money to do what your talking about. I went with the fab fours premium rear, installed it myself, and they offer two models (with or without bumper sensors).

Paper thin sheet metal and overpriced plastic bumpers definitely making auto body shops rich.

Thanks for the replies. It was actually a guy that ran into me. He rear ended me on the interstate of all places while I was driving at highway speed. How aggravating is that ?!?!

The damage could have been worse, but I am still very upset about this since I keep my truck in immaculate condition. Now I'm hoping that the repair shop can fix it properly.

What do you think of the high clearance bumper? I like it, but I am hesitant to cut away a portion of the quarter panels to make it fit. Do you think that would affect resale value? After all, it would appeal to some, but not to others.

I bet in the neighborhood of around 1500-2000 for the repair, I used to do bodywork and with the base coat clear coat and repairs it will be a lot..good luck

Aftermarket stuff generally doesn't add to the resale value and in this case I can't see it reducing the resale value except for perhaps a few buyers. But depending on the body damage you may be able to skip repairing by removing the dented part, thus pocketing the body work part of the insurance payout, which is likely to be significant. You could apply this to your total cost of ownership when selling, should be at least several hundred dollars if not much more.

Here's a pic of my damage from wreck, my estimate was $3600. Bent the bumper down slightly, and put a tiny flex in the passenger side bed. And that's what happened to his when he rear ended me at a stop sign. My new bumper isn't high clearance, but didn't require any cutting and is solid plate. Can't imagine how he would've faired against the new one

I wish the metal bumper would work with blind spot monitoring. From the pictures I've seen on this site, they seem to hold up pretty well. The biggest issue with the metal bumper is that all the energy is transferred forward and the bed is often times pushed into the cab.

I like the rear sensors and the BSM, but the plastic bumper shattered when I was struck. If I had a metal bumper, my quarter panel would probably be OK.

I'm guessing that the repairs will be north of $4000 since the quarter panel will probably have to be replaced and some other metal parts underneath will have to be straightened out. It could have been worse, but now I am just hoping that the repair shop can make it look like new when they're done.
