Saturday, June 8, my 60th birthday, my wife, her sister in law & I were rear ended by a stupid driver in Las Vegas who was not paying attention. We were traveling 35-40 mph & this idiot slammed into the rear end of my truck without making any effort to slow down. Saw him in my rear view mirror just as he plowed into the back of us. Nevada highway patrol responded & took a report. Prior to my leaving, the officer told me the accident was 100% the other drivers fault & he was going to be cited for causing the crash & unsafe speed. My truck doesn’t look too bad at first glance, however most damage is underneath & both rear fenders bow out a bit between the wheel well & rear bumper. Initial body shop estimate is $5011.99. They said the estimate will go up once the bed comes off. The body shop says no apparent frame damage other than the cross member that holds the spare tire & the crash beam at the rear of the bed. It appears the “shitty” Toyota factory rear bumper & spare tire protected my frame from damage. There are no obvious signs of bends, kinks or twists other than the rear bumper brackets that attach to the frame & the spare tire mounting cross member that got pushed upward at an angle from the spare being hit. We are basically all ok. I just have some neck & shoulder pain. Truck goes to body shop this Tuesday. All I can says is we’re thankful we were moving at 35-40 when he rammed us rather than being at a stop.

You'll want to have a reputable body shop get that on a rack and take laser measurements for frame damage.

Have a great body shop doing the work & laser frame machine is the first stop there.

Everyday when I am commuting home on the highway, I am amazed at the number of people staring at their phones.

Glad you’re safe. I also got rear ended by some idiot on his phone. Was dead stopped at a light and he hit me at about 40 and totaled his brand new car.

When I asked the other driver what happened, all he would say was “I don’t know what happened.” When I talked to his insurance company, I asked them if he told them what happened. They replied that he said he didn’t know what happened & he may have rear ended someone.

Glad you are OK, but you need to run, not walk to a medical professional specializing in neck injuries, Your sore neck will either get better or worse and sometimes takes several weeks for injury to manifest itself to it its full damage. Let your insurance know you were injured so they can bill the other party for any medical costs and delay signing a final settlement until the doctor clears you to have no permanent injury.

Ha, I see other driver has a Uber sticker in his windshield, was probably looking at cell phone for his next pickup

He knows what happened he just didn't want to admit fault at the scene, which is what you're 'supposed' to do...let the authorities and insurance companies handle it. But he knew damn well it was his fault I bet. Usually is when you rear end someone, unless maybe the person in front doesn't have working brake lights.

Check the cab and see how bad the damage is where the bed impacted the cab

These ride share apps, or any apps that professional drivers use are not the best idea.
I am sure there are disclaimers that state to not use an app while driving. That isn't a realistic request however.

Same thing happened to me last week. Glad to hear that no one was hurt. I am still waiting to hear back from the insurance company.

Glad you're ok, and even gladder to see he got the worst of it. Hopefully his insurance company knows he's an Uber driver. It'd be just the kind of dick move ins cos pull to say he was engaged in an unapproved business activity that's not covered. You might have to get Uber involved.

Funny thing is, he took the Uber stickers off his windshield and back window after he saw me taking pictures of his car. I mentioned to the highway patrol officer he took them off. He said that I might have to see if he was on their clock or not. He had no passengers in his vehicle when the accident happened

Fortunately, the bed did not strike the back of the cab. It appears the bed barely moved at all. Tomorrow morning it goes into the body shop and then they’ll put it on the laser frame machine and take things from there after they remove the bed & rear bumper.

Agree with Desert Dog, but would like to add that everyone in the truck at the time of the accident needs to get checked out. I'd also think about talking to an attorney just in case someone needs some type of therapy. Believe me, at 60 something is going to start hurting if it isn't already.

Kind of like the story where someone asks if you're OK after an accident and you reply, "I don't know, let me ask my lawyer."

Glad you’re okay. This just happened to me in May and I’m picking my truck up tomorrow.
    Frustrating but fixable.
