Needs a frame. Depends on your insurance carrier/state laws if they will total it or not.

OP can push all he wants, but it will have zero effect on the insurance company's decision- they make decisions based on numbers, not emotion

Considering the size of the truck and 26' trailer and it hitting you stopped while still moving pretty good when hitting you, I'm surprised it didn't do much more damage to your rear.

So that there would be more damage to the frame and passengers in the truck?

That may be correct! They certainly didn’t give me any choice.

Yep, modern cars have crushable bumpers so that the energy of the impact is eaten up to fold and crush the bumper. On the front side, the entire engine bay is actually designed to fold up during an accident to not transfer the energy of the impact to the cabin (so that the cabin won’t fold and crush the passengers). With a steel bumper that won’t give in as easily, that energy will most likely be spent on bending the frame and the passengers will probably get whiplash. Steel bumpers reduce damage in low speed/energy accidents, but they make high speed/energy accidents a lot more dangerous.

They are estimating $6,900 in repair but that does not include the cost of new frame and labor. Suppose to get back to me tomorrow with the full numbers. I'm in Tennessee and the total loss threshold is 75%. It's a 2016 with 75k miles on it so I'm going to be close to that. If it's not totaled they said it'll take 5-6 months till I get it back....

I don’t remember the numbers and I don’t have the final bill since my truck is still at the the body shop. But I believe the frame is another $6 or $7 thousand plus labor would easily add another $10,000 to your repair cost. Toyota claims the it takes 6 weeks or longer to take delivery of a frame. With this corna virus mess going on, who knows how long it might take.

5 to 6 months! Yikes. They are going to pay for you to have a rental car for that long?

It's totaled. Not only was the rear frame warped but the front was as well apparently. Insurance should have my money today and I've already got my replacement Taco picked out. A 2018 TRD OR cement with tech package and 11k miles for $31k.

Nice, IMO I'd rather have a new truck than one rebuilt after a severe accident.

I'll take a bent frame over a serious injury any day. That's the point of crush zones, including a crushable frame; absorbe the damage to improve my chances.

Glad you’re not hurt! I would rather have my truck totaled too. This way you get to enjoy breaking in another truck and you can get it right away. I’ve been without my truck for four months now and this Corona virus is liable to make it several more months.
