Rear gear really necessary for 285’s ?

Debating 265’s or 285’s. Light off-roading trails and camping. I don’t load truck up with real heavy loads. So is re gearing necessary? Or should I just do 265/75/16. Call it done?

Changing the gears is not a mandatory thing. People all over the world get lifted trucks and larger tires and never touch the axles. Just understand a larger tire is harder for the drive train to turn. Will it be noticeable enough to you to be unhappy? That’s to each individual to decide by feel.

Also with larger tires means a larger strain on the transmission. Once again only the person driving the truck before and after the tire change will notice the difference but there will likely be more gear shifting in the higher gears with a larger tire and stock everything else.

Add the larger tires if you want then go from there. If money isn’t an issue go all out :)

Think I will just go up a tire size and call it done.265/75/16

Odd because I have a 2019 trd off road and mine came stock with that size. But still plenty big enough for 99% of most people’s needs. I was going to lift and put 285’s on but that will be a much later day if I do it. Twin turbo setup sounds so much more worthy for the money :)

Go 285s trust me. I started by upgrading to 265/75s and it was great for a while but once my lift was done, the truck looks so much better with 285s. In regard to whether re-gearing is needed for 285s, I was super worried that the truck was going to feel extremely sluggish with that size tire and that I would have to re-gear but to be honest with you, I think the truck handles and drives just fine with 285s. Any bigger and id say it is a must.

If you got the cash for it and are willing to do the other necessary steps to fit 285s (lift/CMC) then go the 285 route. I have a buddy that is thinking of re-gearing but that is because he tows a lot.

From what I understand is that if you regear for 285’s you will be higher than you need to be.
I have 285s and haven’t seen much in terms of power loss and fuel mpg drop. You’ll be fine with the 33s

I’m lifted now just debating on tire size when I’m ready. That being said. Think I’m over thinking it lol. Sounds like your good with the set up

I went 265s first because I got tires before lift. After installing my KANGS 285s were a must. If you regret anything, its probably that you went small and not that you went big.

285s and no regear for me. Seems fine. With the auto the engine spins high during climbs but it probably would anyways. Even 33s look small to me on these trucks, couldn't imagine going back to stock. Fuel economy will go down a decent amount but it's a Tacoma not a prius so it is what it is.

Another 285 with no re-gear vote. I tow all the time, too. No noticeable power loss. Slight MPG hit but otherwise I think it's not worth the money to re-gear.

Sounds good thanks a lot for your input. I’m not worried about mpg’s either. It’s a truck

Living in San Diego the constant gear hunting up all the hills is maddening. I just went from 265 to 285s and a regear to 5.29s couldn’t be happier. MPG went up because the truck is no longer constant shifting up hills it just holds and glides up the hill.

Did you OVtune first? Just to try that option?! I wouldn’t have regear until I explored all other avenues! Not bashing, just ask in’!

Not necessary but regearing makes the truck drive a heck of a lot better. It should have came with 4.88s from the factory.

No need to regear with 285’s. I’m running 35’s and I haven’t regeared yet. Eventually I will get 5.29’s but I really am in no rush because of the way the truck drives. It feels a little sluggish with all the armor and larger tires but nothing that makes me want to regear right now.

If I were to change the gears in the truck after going to 285 from 265, I would personally try to obtain the 4.30 gears from the manual trans Tacoma. Going up to 285 from 265 makes going from 3.93 to 4.88 a bit overkill.

The truck needs to be regeared stock lol. 2.7 and 3.5 doesn’t matter , the 6 speed auto sucks. Even with the updates and tsb it doesn’t solve it.

I’ve had ovtune since I bought the truck. Thanks for the suggestion.
