I own a 2nd gen and think it is getting to the point of replacement. The 2nd gen came with 3 leaf springs and be on the bump stops when loaded. I updated via the TSB to 4 leaf springs and it is great. Will I be in the same boat with the 3rd gen? I use my Tacoma as a truck, not a sport utility.

Not sure what you are asking but 3rd gen trucks have the same 4 leaf updated pack you installed on your 2nd gen.

We need more information on how much weight you plan to put in the bed. Otherwise, I suggest you check the payload specs on the Toyota website.

Sounds like he got these free and is checking to see if they offer increased payload capacity.

That said, I can't answer this, I only ever carry mountain bikes lol.

I think the OP is asking if the 3rd gen leaf springs will be able to get the job done. The challenge to answering his question is that he didn’t provide any detail about the job to be done.

Oh or that lol. I guess, he could look up the payload capacity. I misread and thought he was asking if the 3rd gen springs had higher capacity.

I think I got the answer. My 2nd gen tacoma was rated as a 1/2 ton pickup but could not carry the 1/2 ton without being on the bump stops. I discovered that Toyota put in 3 leaf springs in the US models because marketing research said people that bought them wanted a softer ride. I wanted a truck, so I saw there was a TSB to update to the 4 leaf spring the truck was designed to have in the first place and was being used on vehicles sold in Canada and other countries. Looks like the 3rd GEN Tacomas are now showing up in the US with the 4 leafs (based on the first reply) and are likely to be usable for picking up supplies (bed full or landscape supplies, etc.). I love my current truck and it is a shame the Toyota frame rust problems may be the end of it; but so it goes. The 3rd GEN looks decent too although I prefer the older body style and the 4 liter engine (torque).

I am also considering something like this: https://www.autorust.com/in-house-service/

Frame caps welded over the bad part of the frame. Note that I only have the rust in the front section of the frame and only on the outside of it (inside and top look good). But you know how this stuff spreads.

You cannot in general relate the number of leafs to the payload capacity. You can get a approximate payload capacity for a particular configuration on the Toyota website. Tacomas are a bit of a lightweight in that department. The I4 access cabs are the best, because the GVWR is the same for all configurations and they are the lightest.

Tacoma sport comes out at 1105lbs payload capacity. 1/2 ton. So as long as they don't play some game in the US like they did with 2nd GENs it should be good. am fine with what I can do with my 2nd GEN.

I know Toyota replaced a grip of frames due to the rust, but you might be past the replacement timeframe offered.

If you are planning on having the bed loaded frequently on the 3g you might want to look into a Sumo Spring bumpstop upgrade. With those bumps it's a bit rough unloaded but with weight back there they should help out if you choose not to upgrade the leaf pack.

It’s more of a 1/4 ton. The payload you are referring to would include the 5 passengers.

The terms 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1 ton are pretty antiquated and misleading, but I agree that 1/2 ton today generally means a f150, Chevy 1500, or equivalent.

Honda Ridgeline, Ford Maverick and Hundai Santa Cruz all have higher payloads. Maybe it's time for you to switch it up.

If you get a LB 4x4 sport it's going to be closer to 950 or less. 1105 is for a "base" sport. Anything you add takes away from that number.

haha. no not likely. is it really the same torque at the same RPM as the 4 liter. Then no, it won't matter.

Maybe. I came from a GMC 1500 to the Toyota.
