In the first and second gens you can by adding a short jumper wire to on of the electrical connections, hoping someone smarter than me has figured it out...

Sorry for the thread revive but seemed the most current thread.
my '17 off road 2wd had diff locker...I was super confused why my replacement (after a drunk lady hit me) '17 offroad 4x4 won't do the same...read some threads...now I know...and am sad. I don't always need 4lo when I'm off road but would like to have the diff lock even in 4hi or 2hi on those occasions. Oh well at least now I know :(

Seems odd that Toyota would allow or configure to be able to run the 4x4 locker in 2WD or 4Hi, since the 2WD trucks can do it.
My first gen Taco came out before the TRD Offroad option so I installed a Lock Right locker and it was GREAT having the locker in both 2WD and 4Hi situations!

I always liked it when I found a big patch of dirt XD DONUTS!!!! I want to install the center diff on my truck and I believe there's a hack to turn the rear locker on in 2hi on the 4x4 too that I will eventually do...but the center diff is my main goal :D keep in in 4hi and not bind up anything that way...better acceleration...I haven't noticed any real mpg difference in 2hi vs 4hi...nothing I care about...maybe 1mpg if even. But I also have a heavy foot

I'm getting close, still waiting on sourcing connectors to build a harness. It's very doable. Will post up my method when it's done.

You and @lapoltba should PM. I think he gave up after considerable effort at debugging the inevitable warnings and electronic nanny problems. Could be wrong... he'll let us know if I am.

What would the point of this be? If moving at a decent clip in either 2 or 4 wheel high, locking the rear is going to do what for you?

I’m pretty sure being able to lock the dif in 2wd would make it so both back wheels spin instead of just one.. the ability to lock the rear diff in 2wd gives you the advantage of 2 wheels spinning without the turning radius being effected like it is in normal 4hi and 4 low situations. When 4hi and 4 low is activated you will encounter some binding when trying to make a tight turn. Thus the reason for people trying to achieve 2wd rear differential lock.
If I am incorrect hopefully someone will correct me.

Ummm don’t you see that round dial that has 2wd, 4H, and 4L on it? Turn it- that will do way more for you than just having the rear end locked in 2WD.

Had a Prerunner that had a locking rear diff. It was nice especially in the snow and ice as there is no weight in the rear of a truck and so locking it helped it out. But it is no substitute for 4wd. That is why you don’t really see any 2wd vehicles with this feature. All the weight is up front. That is where you need and want your drive wheels to be for traction. You paid for a 4x4 use it.

But once your moving having the rear locked together isn’t going to do much for you. You can use 4H to get moving and then just put it back to 2wd. Having your rear end locked once moving and just in 2wd is going to do what? We are talking about having this feature in a 4x4 right? Has there ever been a 4x4 rig from the factory that has had this feature? If it had any kind of value in a 4x4 you would have seen it.

I used this feature in my Prerunner and several Audi Quattro’s we’ve owned but I have never been in a situation in one of our 4x4’s where I wish I had this feature.

Could someone give me an example where it would be more beneficial to leave it in 2wd and lock the rear end up versus just putting it in 4H?

Actually having the rear end locked will cause you more problems turning than just having it in 4H. When in 4H your diffs are open and the outer wheel can spin at a different speed which is needed when turning. If you lock either end your going to cause binding as the outer wheel can’t spin faster like it’s suppose to when cornering. Another reason why 4H is better and why manufacturers don’t offer this feature and why you can only have the rear end locked at lower speeds.

Ford Super Dutys with the FX4 package allow you to lock the differential at any speed below 20mph, regardless of 4x4 switch position. It comes in and out quicker than 4x4, i used it a couple times launching from stop lights on ice in a work truck.

ALSO —- a locked rear end with little weight over it makes for some lovely parking lot drifting

4H is worse on pavement than a locked rear axle. In 4H your axle diffs may be open but the transfer case is locked (no center diff in a true part time 4wd system) and must output equal speeds front to rear. Just like left to right wheels across the axle, the net front and rear speeds want to be different as they track different paths. This introduces binding in the whole system which will include at the steered wheels which makes it worse.

DD with a spooled rear, then DD in true 4wd. You'll quickly see which is less fun.

I bought a spooled 3rd for my samurai, I was told it was open. First right turn out of my driveway was interesting. I thought I had fucked up something. Called the guy I bought it from and he said, "oh I must have sent you the one with the mini spool"
